College Prowler Take

Unlike the feelings about on-campus dining, Clarkies love the local Worcester restaurants around campus and all over Worcester. If there is a nationality whose food you like to eat, then you can definitely find it near Clark, probably within walking distance. On top of the closeness to campus, most of the restaurants in the area are right inside the budget of a college student. Some consider Worcester to have a better dining scene than Boston due to the amount of great food at low prices. Many students travel off campus very frequently to their favorite places instead of eating on campus, and still others continue to explore the area and constantly return with tales of new and delicious places.

Worcester is a breeding ground for locally-owned restaurants and chains alike. Because of so many hungry locals and students, prices are able to be kept very low for a pretty large amount of food. Heading farther from campus, like down Shrewsbury Street, prices begin to rise, but so does the quality of the dining experience. If you need a place to take your parents, then head out in that direction, and you’ll be sure to spend 20 minutes driving up and down the street trying to decide which place looks the best.

There are a ton of restaurants in Worcester and all different types. On Shrewsbury Street, there is a collection of Indian and Chinese restaurants. Within walking distance, there is Da Lat, a cheap and wonderful Vietnamese place; Webster House, a local-run Greek-style place and a favorite of the locals; and a number of nearby Chinese places. The best Chinese food place that delivers—which is very important—is the Ming House.

The restaurants are good and numerous if you don't mind a 5- to 15-minute walk. Fantastic Pizza has great falafel. Blue Jeans and Mas Voce are the two best pizza joints in Worcester, and both are within walking distance from Clark. Da Lat has great Vietnamese food, and Thai Cha Da has awesome Thai noodles. There are lots of more upper-end options, too, like Evo, a café next to The Living Earth, the sushi house on Park Avenue, and many others.

I love the restaurants off campus. There's hundreds on Park Avenue and Shrewsbury Street. I love Sakura Tokyo and Baba on Park Avenue. Sakura is very nicely priced, and Baba can be a bit expensive. The Flying Rhino on Shrewsbury is not that great—it doesn't have that many options and is pretty expensive. I love Pho Dakao also on Park—it's Vietnamese. Peppercorns is good too, and it's right by Clark.

Clark is in the center of the cultural and diverse part of Worcester, so there are so many low-price restaurants of every kind of cuisine within walking distance. And, the food is good too!

My weakness is eating out. As a college student, I have found this to be problematic, especially in a place of temptations such as Worcester. The Clark University area of Worcester is chock-full of quick eats, as well as nice sit-down experiences. First off, as far as fast food goes, on both sides of campus are late-night Chinese takeout restaurants, there’s a Burger King, a McDonald’s, a Taco Bell, a Domino’s, and a KFC within a half mile from campus. Chain restaurants like Friendly’s and Arby’s are all within walking distance as well. Moreover, Worcester offers some of the finest sit-in dining places around. Between WPI and Clark campuses you’ll find Vietnamese, Southwestern, Thai, Chinese, Italian, Mexican, Greek, and Japanese restaurants, just to name a few. Places like Saigon’s on Main Street, Sakura Tokyo restaurant on Park Avenue, Tortilla Sam’s on Highland Street, and House of India on Park Avenue are some of my personal favorites. And for coffee and dessert, there’s always Café Dolce on Shrewsbury Street.

Polar Beverages Inc. began in Worcester in 1882 and still has a working factory right near Clark! You can see a large polar bear waving at the highway from the roof of the building next to the College Square exit. Take a tour or hit them up for donations to your next party or campus event.
