College Prowler Take

When at college, what you’re given is what you eat.
Clemson is no exception. Students say the food is tolerable, and there are certain places that are better than others. Clemson House and Schilleter are agreed to be better dining halls than Harcombe. Other alternatives to dining hall food are the Hendrix Center’s East Side Food Court and the Fernow Street Café.

The food on campus does not leave much to complain about. There are many options to choose from, and there is something for everyone (Clemson makes an effort to offer more health-conscious food choices). The only complaints students have are about the dining hall hours. Harcombe stops serving dinner at 7:30 p.m. and Schilleter at 7 p.m. Most students stock up on snacks for those late-night cravings, and you can always use your Tiger Stripe card at Papa John’s for delivery.

The dining halls are good in that they have options to choose from. Harcombe is the better dining hall in my opinion. There are several fast food places on campus, but that can get expensive if you are on a meal plan. I only purchased a meal plan freshman year. After that I did my own grocery shopping and ate at food courts occasionally. It ended up being a lot cheaper than buying a meal plan. My favorite, though, were the waffles in Harcombe. Java City, in the library, is a popular spot for coffee, snacks, and hanging out.

On campus food is pretty good. You can get Burger King at Hendrix, and Chili's is always good. The dining halls are average; the food is edible, but nothing gourmet. Off-campus food downtown is always better, but worse for your wallet.

The food on campus is a mix of good and bad. The largest dining hall, Harcombe, has for years (despite a fairly large selection) been less than mediocre. The other dining hall, Schilletter, is actually quite good and provides a variety of real food, including a Southern Kitchen which features vegetables, stir-fry, and a meat daily. As for other possibilities on campus, there is a Chick-fil-A, Burger King, and Pizza Hut, all of which are of chain quality. Fernow Street Cafe also has burgers, coffee, and meat and veggie plates that are good. The Hendrix Center also has a couple of good choices, as does the Canteen in the Student Union.

The food isn’t bad—Schilleter is the best dining hall. Clemson House is good occasionally, but Harcombe isn’t the best place to go. The ice cream is always good . . . that’s located in Hendrix Student Center.

I personally do not like the food on campus. Most of the good food is at the Hendrix Center, but it is very expensive. I would recommend having food in your room that you can eat for meals if you need to.
