College Prowler Take
Clemson has 15 computer labs around campus supporting about 1,000 computers. Students agree that the Clemson channel is a great help because it tells you which labs are full and which are not. For the most part, the network is well maintained, but you can always expect something to go wrong before a big assignment is due. Clemson’s computer network is sufficient to meet the needs of all of its students. Although computer labs in popular locations can fill quickly during the day, there is always a computer available somewhere—you just have to know where to look. The University has an agreement with Dell, so the computers are state-of-the-art and are constantly being updated. You should have no problem surviving at Clemson without your own computer—as long as you’re not addicted to Instant Messenger.

The thing about Clemson is that...
The thing about Clemson is that most people are aware of maybe 1/3 of the labs available on campus. These well-known labs can often times be busy, but you'll become knowledgable on what times are best for which labs. And if you're willing to walk a bit out of the way, you can find these empty labs. But I'd say, if you have a relatively light computer and aren't planning on printing anything out, go ahead and bring your laptop. Especially if you're just going to play around on Facebook, because that causes a lot of frustration to those waiting for computers in labs with homework assignments to print off.

Clemson requires all fresmen to purchase a laptop (but don't get it from Clemson, those computers are horrible!). The computer labs are only crowded in between classes when people are trying to print stuff out.

You should definitely bring your own computer to Clemson. There are enough computer labs all over campus, though, that you can find an open computer with ease. Clemson also offers CCIT for free help with your computers. It's right on campus and really convenient.

I love that Clemson has DSL. Computer labs are available all over campus, and generally you can find a computer available, but I definitely recommend bringing your own. It’s not imperative—my roommate survived just fine without one—but it’s an awesome convenience, especially since you’ll get a ton of [e-mail] daily from teachers, clubs, or whatever it is that you are involved in. Everybody is always signed on Instant Messenger, too. I don’t mean that everybody is glued to AIM 20 hours a day, but if you don’t know where your friends are, just check their away messages; they’ll always have one up. |

Count on the network crashing at least once a semester right before your huge project is due. Some labs are overcrowded, while others are often under utilized. You just have to know which ones to go to. Bring your own computer. I recommend a good laptop, probably a Dell. |
