College Prowler Take
Security phones, police escorts, and lights all over campus help make Clemson a very safe environment for students. The annual Clemson Safe Walk involves students and members of the Clemson community who walk the campus and discuss ways to improve safety. Most students agree that Clemson is an extremely safe campus as long as you take the basic precautionary measures, like walking in a group after dark and locking your doors. Clemson is a fairly large university located in a rural setting, which makes it an obvious target for theft by outsiders. However, most students will tell you they haven’t had any trouble, and there really isn’t too much to worry about. As long as you use common sense (lock up your bikes, cars, and apartments, and avoid walking alone at night), you shouldn’t have any difficulties with strangers or outsiders. Students Speak Out

There are security phones all over...
There are security phones all over campus, along sidewalks, and on the sides of every building. Every path is also lit at night. Each dorm has a security guard or a hired student who sits at the dorm’s front desk and makes sure that no one enters who shouldn’t be allowed. |

I feel very secure on my campus....
I feel very secure on my campus. Common sense tells anyone not to walk around at four [in the morning] by yourself anywhere, but if you and a couple of friends have a late night at the library, there’s no problem walking down the sidewalk (they are all lit, of course) to your dorm. Clemson wants to be safe. There is an annual campus safety walk where students and the campus police check for burnt-out lights, working phones, and areas that don’t feel safe. The problems are then addressed that year, including more blue-light emergency phones and better lighting in parking areas. |

As you know, there is nowhere in...
As you know, there is nowhere in this world that is really safe. However, I have never felt afraid to walk on Clemson’s campus during the evening. The streets are well lit, and the police stay near. I will tell you the truth: there have been a couple of crimes committed on campus, but if you stay in a group of at least two people, you should be safe. |

I think safety is excellent here....
I think safety is excellent here. My best friend here served on Student Senate as the safety chairperson, and during his watch, I believe there were no major safety problems for the entire school year. The place is very [well-lit] at night, and I’ve had no problems with theft in my dorm or apartments. |

I have never felt threatened by...
I have never felt threatened by security here. Clemson is a small rural town. It feels safe here, and I’ve never personally known any women who have been assaulted or attacked. I have one friend who had some CDs stolen from his jeep; I think that may have been the first thing the Clemson police had to deal with that month. |
