Colby is a small school, and a sizable portion—about a third—of the students here are athletes. Hockey and football games are usually well attended, especially those versus archrivals Bowdoin and Bates, and Colby spirit is in full force during those games. However, in general, Colby students are more attracted to the less-traditional sports, such as woodsman, ultimate Frisbee, Quidditch, and broomball. It is also commonplace to find people skiing and snowboarding in the winter, whether at Sugarloaf, Sunday River, or down Chapel Hill. Sledding down Runnals Hill is also popular. The intramural teams, known as I-Play, are certainly more popular than the varsity sports and are a great way to get to know people outside of your dorm and your classes.
Although varsity sports do not define life at Colby, students are far from lazy armchair-dwellers. Since Colby is a Division III school, students can play more than one sport, and athletics are only one season rather than year-round. I-Play sports are fun and casual, and you can even choose to play recreationally rather than competitively on most teams. January is a great time for winter athletes—the relaxed nature of Jan-Plan provides lots of time to drive to Sugarloaf Mountain and ski or snowboard. Most students stay active without getting competitive.
