Dining is integral to the Colby social life, and the individual characteristics of the three dining halls partly define campus politics. Tables in the dining halls are big, as they are meant for large groups of friends, and they usually end up overcrowded anyway. Lots of social interaction happens over dining hall food, and it’s not too much of a stretch to say that friendships have formed and ended due to dining hall preference. Foss lovers praise the gourmet and vegan fare but can be blind to the small size and crowdedness of their favorite dining hall. Bob’s fans are devoted to the pasta and grilled cheese bars but can overlook the dismal atmosphere and wimpy salad bar. Dana is surprisingly middle-of-the-road, although students who live in Dana love the convenience (and consequently never leave their building).

Three dining halls can feel like too few by the end of the school year, especially during the long month of January when Foss is (tragically) closed, but food is an important part of the Colby experience. The food is good, the desserts are phenomenal, and the dining halls provide a great social outlet, especially since meal plans are required.
