College Prowler Take

Dining is integral to Colby social life, and the individual characteristics of the three dining halls are part of what defines campus politics. Tables in the dining halls are big, as they are meant for large groups of friends, and they usually end up overcrowded anyway. Lots of social interaction happens over dining hall food, and it’s not too much of a stretch to say that friendships have formed and ended due to dining hall preference. Foss-lovers praise the gourmet and vegan fare but can be blind to the small size and crowdedness of their favorite dining hall. Bob’s fans are devoted to the pasta and grilled cheese bars but can overlook the dismal atmosphere and wimpy salad bar. Dana is surprisingly middle-of-the-road, although students who live in Dana love the convenience (and consequently never leave their building).

Three dining halls can feel like too few by the end of the school year, especially during the long month of January when Foss is (tragically) closed, but food is an important part of the Colby experience. The food is good, the desserts are phenomenal, and the dining halls provide a great social outlet, especially since meal plans are required.

The food is amazing. Dining services does a wonderful job of providing a range of meal options and each dining hall is different. Foss provides students with a more vegetarian/vegan options, Dana is more typical college food, and Bobs is like eating in a nice restaurant. There is also the Spa, which makes great sandwiches for students on the go.

Considering the small size of Colby, I've always been impressed by the range of options of places to eat on campus. With three dining halls and The Spa, it's hard to get sick of the food. Dana serves pretty standard "college food"—sandwiches, salads, pizza, burgers, and different kinds of stir fry. Foss offers organic and vegetarian options. The meals there are sometimes difficult to pronounce, but it's a nice, healthier alternative to the normal food. Robert's, or Bob's, serves a wide range of foods, but differs from the other two dining halls in the way it serves its food. Here, your whole meal is given to you on a plate, much like you would eat dinner at home. The Spa is mostly used as a late-night option—the mozzarella sticks and quesadillas are wonderful as a study break from a long night in the library.

Colby's dining services rank...

Colby's dining services rank within the top 10 of all campus food nationwide. There's a vegetarian/vegan-friendly dining hall that offers meal options for students who don't eat meat, although it also serves a meat dish most nights. There's a "comfort food" dining hall that always has burgers, fries, pizza, and some international dish. It's great for athletes because there are a lot of hearty options. The third dining hall offers the widest variety of food because you never know what you'll get. It's known for its international country of the month dish, which is almost always appetizing. You might get tired of the food after a while, but I find that I can usually break up the monotony with some takeout one night every couple of weeks.

I like the food at Colby, but it gets repetitive sometimes. Some nights dinner is really good, but some nights I find that there is not much to eat. I also wish we had unlimited meals in our meal plan.

The dining halls at Colby are...

The dining halls at Colby are usually good. There are three dining halls, each with a different atmosphere. Sports teams eat at Dana, which has typical American food; Bob's also has American food and a specialty international station; and Foss is organic and has lots of options for vegetarians. There is also The Spa in the student center, which is a great place for greasy food when you're out on the weekends because it's open late.
