Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Colby seems to be getting stricter about drinking and partying. The administrative philosophy on partying is pretty much that students are going to drink and party, so they should make sure no one ends up in the hospital or jail. However, to avoid getting in trouble with the local police, hefty open container fines have added to the strictness of campus security. So, don’t walk around the halls with an open can of beer—you’re basically asking for trouble.

Every dorm has a Community Advisor (CA) whose primary role is to build community within each dorm. They also conduct safety rounds on the weekends to ensure no one has passed out in the bathrooms, and CAs can issue citations and call security if parties get too loud or raucous. Most people know at least one security guard fairly well, which is a good way to avoid getting a citation. Also, security only gets involved in dorm parties if the music is too loud or people are wandering the halls with beers in hand. However, most students learn how to stay out of trouble. It's pretty easy to not get in trouble here, and students with good judgment will be fine. Most agree that Colby students are pretty lucky.

Pretty Laid Back- Unless You Go Off Campus

I definitely advise drinking only on-campus, because the Waterville police are pretty strict. However, the security guards are a lot more laid back and it is easier to get away with drinking underage.

Not Too Strict

You're free to pretty much do as you please at Colby. Campus strictness comes into play if you're abusing yourself or others or dorm property, but other than that, all is fair game. You can do anything you want in your room, as long as it doesn't bother your neighbors. Everyone is very considerate, and this is oftentimes what governs 'strictness', how conscientious you are.

Strict, but Fair

Security is strict but pretty fair when it comes to underage drinking and drug use. The penalties are fairly severe for first-time offenders, but it is hard to get caught by security as they are usually pretty lenient.

The guest policy isn't strict at all. Basically, if you want to have guest stay overnight, you just need the consent of all your roommates.
