Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Colby students are undeniably friendly. They smile at one another, make conversation easily, and are overwhelmingly optimistic. Ready to discuss Plato's "The Cave" or how to clone flies at a moment's notice, students are also not afraid to have stimulating conversations outside of the classroom. Many students at Colby are extremely attractive, but there is not a "typical" Colby student—there are jocks, geeks, hippies, prepsters, hipsters, theater lovers, artists, and everything in between on the Hill, and a near equal quantity of each "type."

Even though everyone is different, there are qualities that unite all students: Everyone tends to be accepting, friendly, and passionate about something. Expect to wave to or smile at most of the people you pass as you walk from the dining hall to the library, and be prepared to meet and converse with too many people to remember during the first weeks of school.

Okay..

I have no idea where the A+ is coming from for the Colby guys.. First off, a great majority of the guys here are under 5'7". Most of them are so short that the basketball team players look so freakishly tall. I was surprised to find out that the basketball team players are not any taller than 6'5" (or somewhere around there).

Not saying that height devotes to the huge factor of men's attractiveness, but wouldn't you rather date a guy who's at least taller than you? Yea, exactly MY POINT.

Guys and Girls at Colby

Colby has a reputation for having many white, upper-middle-class, private school kids. They are classified by their "outdoorsy prep" look: lots of brand-name clothing, but flannel and L.L.Bean boots are a must. The COC (Colby Outing Club) is popular for their Katahdin hike, and most students participate in CCAK, a mentoring program with kids in the area. Colby's motto for social life is "work hard, play harder."

The students here tend to feed off one another in the way we dress; because it is so cold everyone matches in the rain with rainboots and raincoats and then in the cold with various Patagonia, North Face, and L.L.Bean gear. Maine is cold and I think that has a lot to do with it. There are not a lot of goth people but there are a lot of prepster, hippie, and hipster looks, along with the typical lax bro and girl in pearls. It seems like everyone is from 20 minutes outside of Boston but we do have a lot of international students, but they tend to stick to only hanging out with each other. The campus is very good looking though. Everyone goes to the gym or works out somehow. Also I'd say a lot of people here come from a rich family and have good looks in their genes, so everyone's faces here are beautiful. I'm lucky to be surrounded by beautiful people all the time.

Social Scene

Most of Colby’s weekend socializing starts with small gatherings in a friend’s dorm room and ends with a larger party either off campus or at the senior apartments on campus. Dances occur about once a month and are a great way to see friends and meet new people. During the week, socializing occurs in dining halls, at the gym, in the library, and in dorms.

Hookups or Relationships?

Either/or, but casual dating is almost unheard of. Colby students tend to either hook up randomly and frequently or get involved in intense and long-term relationships. A small percentage of drunk weekend hookups turn into relationships but only after at least a month of hooking up. Many upperclassmen are in long-term relationships, but freshmen tend to play the field.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

Hookups tend to begin in classes—no, that's a joke.The party scene at Colby is where the hookup-style relationships grow and flourish (and flourish they do). Alcohol is a pretty prominent aspect of life on the Hill—it's not at all uncommon to come across students gathered in dorm rooms downing Natural "Natty" Light on a Tuesday night. Head to any of the established party dorms (Dana, Foss, Heights, and AMS are notable), grab a can of beer, and watch the world of college hookups unfold. Heights dances are especially famous, as one student said, "I hope to God there's an entire chapter devoted to Heights dances in this book." Relationships that begin under these alcohol-induced situations tend to measure their longevity in minutes or hours, maybe days if the hookup lasts through the weekend. Looking for a relationship? Real life at Colby (as opposed to the party world) revolves around classes and dorms, making these the best places to find true love (or at least a more substantial relationship). Small class sizes and after-hours study sessions make the academics at Colby great, but they also make it a lot easier to get to know that hot guy/girl in the back row. Getting to know the people in your building, or in the buildings of friends, can help spark relationships, too. There’s nothing like complaining about the crowded laundry rooms to develop a sentimental bond. Dining halls are good places to meet people, as well. Colby students are noted for their friendliness, so it’s not at all uncommon to strike up a conversation with the beautiful stranger standing behind you in the omelet line.

Dress Code

Colby students are varied in their dress styles. You'll see everything from athletes decked out in team gear to the preps in khakis and polar fleece to the outdoorsy students showing off dirtied Carhartts and flannel. Every student owns several bookstore items and wears this Colby gear with pride. Students carry totes or backpacks to class, and girls accessorize with pearls.
