College Prowler Take
It’s a testament to how much Colby students trust security that absolutely everyone seems to feel completely safe on campus, even after the tragic murder of Dawn Rossignol in the fall of 2003. Colby’s isolated location is certainly a reason for this sense of safety. Also, Colby security is very visible and very well known. Most students can tell you the names and nicknames of at least one security officer, and it’s not uncommon for students to stop and chat with whichever officer is patrolling around outside dances. Also, students trust one another, so most feel comfortable leaving their books and bags in the library while they meet friends at a dining hall for dinner, and there are very few reports of stolen items. If you lose something, chances are you’ll either find it right where you left it or get a phone call from the person who found it. When an outsider stole from students this past semester, Colby Security immediately solved the issue, and students quickly regained their comfort. The diligence of Security makes Colby a very safe campus. Students tend to be on good terms with security—unless they’re breaking up parties, which does happen (see the Campus Strictness section)—and on good terms with each other, which makes everyone feel safe on campus. Security is great, although we...
Security is great, although we live in an area that is disconcertingly unsafe. There have been several instances of attacks on women, and there have been two murders over the past 20 years. Colby has done a great job increasing lighting and security, but there are still weirdos out there.

I usually feel safe at Colby. It is well lit, and there are emergency call boxes all over. In some dorms you can leave your door unlocked all year without trouble, though this can occasionally result in minor theft. Usually these thefts occur in clusters, and when the person—never a Colby student as far as I know—is caught, they stop. The campus is relatively isolated from the town, and Waterville is small, so there aren't many problems.

I have never felt unsafe on...
I have never felt unsafe on Colby's campus. The security is great and the head residents do a great job on weekends of taking care of students who need help. Campus security is always willing to give students a ride across campus at any time of night. As for dorm safety, only students with keycards can get into dormitories, and after a certain time at night, only students who live in the specific dormitory can get into it. As a safety precaution, many students keep their doors locked. However, there are some students who feel comfortable keeping their doors open all the time.

Campus is relatively safe. There were a few attacks one year, but they were all by the same guy, and he was arrested. I leave my door unlocked all the time.

Security is pretty vigilant, and there is little crime on campus. Thefts can sometimes happen, but only if you're careless with your things.

Did You Know?This is a tragic but important fact: in September of 2003, a senior at Colby, Dawn Rossignol, was found dead about a mile from campus. Her death was ruled a homicide, and her killer, Edward Hackett, a parolee from a prison in Utah, has been tried, found guilty, and sentenced to life in prison without parole.
