It’s a testament to how much Colby students trust security that everyone seems to feel completely safe on campus, even after the tragic murder of Dawn Rossignol in the fall of 2003. Colby’s isolated location is certainly a reason for this sense of safety. Also, campus security is very visible and well known. Most students can tell you the names and nicknames of at least one security officer, and it’s not uncommon for students to stop and chat with whichever officer is patrolling around outside dances. Students trust one another, so most feel comfortable leaving their books and bags in the library while they meet friends at a dining hall for dinner, and there are very few reports of stolen items. If you lose something, chances are you’ll either find it right where you left it or get a phone call from the person who found it.
Colby's health center is open during the week and offers free counseling services and many medical resources. It is the only college health center in Maine that is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, so everyone feels confident going there. The doctors and nurses are very accessible and approachable. Also, within 10 miles of campus are three of the best hospitals in Maine. It's a fact of college that you will probably get sick, but Colby students find solace in the wonderful health services provided by the College.
