Quick Stats

Best Ways to Get Around Town
  • The Jitney
  • Drive yourself or borrow a friend's car
Best Ways to Get to the Airport
  • Colby subsidizes airport shuttles for enrolled students, so they pay half price. During busy times, students can almost always get a good group rate. Parents can use these same shuttle services at full price. Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Until they perfect the art of molecular beaming, there’s not much hope for isolated Colby students. The single most effective way to get around Waterville, Maine, or New England is to have a car or become friends with someone who does. Fortunately for Colby students, everyone is allowed to have a car on campus, so finding transportation isn’t nearly as hard as it could be. Colby does have a student-run shuttle called the Jitney, but an overwhelming majority of students think of it as unreliable and difficult to use. The security office has taxi vouchers, but these are not often used, either. In fact, some of the taxi services don’t even accept the vouchers any more. Colby subsidizes shuttles to the airport, although the least-expensive service is no longer available. The Amtrak Downeaster is a great way to get to Boston and New York and is relatively inexpensive, but it still takes an hour and a half to get to the Portland Amtrak station.

It’s possible to get off campus without a car, but it’s also expensive and sometimes unreliable. If you have a car, bring it. If you don’t have one, don’t worry too much because you’ll almost assuredly be friends with someone who does. Just don’t count on public transportation to get you around.

Jitney Is Unreliable but There Are Other Options

The jitney is unreliable and has been known to strand kids places (like Walmart...) but for transportation to off-campus locations for jobs or clubs, there are cars you can rent out (if you are authorized). Also, you can get taxi vouchers to waive fees for getting a ride to the aforementioned locations.

Make Us of the Jitney

Having the jitney to get into town for free is great, but you definitely can't rely on it for anything time-sensitive, since you have to wait a long time for a pick up usually. But taxis are generally cheap ($4 to anywhere in town, basically) and as a last resort it's not too far too walk or take a bike (also available for free.)
