College Prowler Take
Athletic competition has always been an important aspect of Colgate tradition. In keeping with this tradition, Colgate is constantly revamping, remodeling, and renovating its workout facilities every year in response to the high frequency of students. All of its varsity teams are Division I, and their many championship titles merit recognition. Fittingly, students support Raider athletics whenever the opportunity arises. But there isn’t as spirited a following as large southern universities or Big 10 schools have. One cannot ignore the crowd of students who stand outside in a ten-degree blizzard to watch its championship football team, or the rambunctious mob of students who tore down a goal post after a Raider football victory. Hockey games always see enthusiastic and boisterous crowds, and students, along with other teams, support each other well.

There are a lot of varsity sports for a school our size, which means a considerable amount of the students are involved. Intramural sports are pretty big—softball and basketball, especially. Most students are involved in some kind of sport.

This is a very athletic campus, but I couldn't care less for sports. I know that there are good varsity and intramural sport opportunities here.

Varsity sports are a mixed bag....
Varsity sports are a mixed bag. While I'm not an athlete myself, I can tell you that almost most athletes I talk to hate their coaches. The coaching staff isn't that great here and it shows. Our teams rarely make it to the playoffs. Attendance at all athletic events is pathetic even though they're free. The athletics department has taken to bribing students to come to events.

You get free stuff for going to some games, which is because generally people don't go to most games. There are a few games every semester that most people go to though, like the Cornell hockey game. IM sports are a blast.

Varsity sports are pretty big at Colgate. The athletes do get plenty of facilities. There is also quite a variety as far as IM sports are concerned. Most people at Colgate are into sports and are also involved in club sports.

Getting Tickets
Tickets are easy to get. If students show their student ID, they enjoy free admission to regular season home games.
Most Popular Sports
The student body most avidly supports football—well, at least until the snow starts—and men’s hockey. A large percent of the student body come out to watch the Raiders play, not simply because they win but also because they are close friends with many of the athletes. There are also incentives created by the Athletic Department to increase student attendance, called Rowdy Raider Points. Free merchandise is given after attending a certain number of games.
Most Overlooked Teams
Every sport has its following. Because so many teams have advanced to the Division I finals, they all received a great deal of support and attention from the students, staff, and administration of Colgate. Those that get less attention include the softball, volleyball, and crew teams.
Best Place to Take a Walk
Take a nice stroll down Willow Path and around Taylor Lake to see the famous pair of swans, Adam and Eve. Jogging trails run above campus near the old golf course and across the old ski slopes. A walk into town is always relaxing and fun.
Did You Know?In 2006, Colgate was named the second most fit of all U.S. college campuses.
