Colgate prides itself in its Division I teams, competing in both the Patriot League and the Eastern College Athletic Conference (for hockey). This pride is easily seen in the top-notch facilities and resources devoted to the athletic teams on campus—not surprising considering about one-third of students is involved in Division I teams. The commitment to fitness and sports on campus goes beyond the varsity teams, however; there is a thriving intramural sports scene and a number of club sports teams with coaches and regular practices. Any way you cut it, there are plenty of opportunities to compete at any level of involvement. For those looking to keep in shape, the recently-built Trudy Fitness Center is three times the size of the William Bryan Little Fitness Center, which now houses the varsity weight room, and there is never a wait for the state-of-the-art cardio machines, each with a 15-inch television. Students also embrace their sense of place by taking advantage of the miles of cross-country running trails and ski trails in the winter, as well as free access to the boathouse on the local lake.
When it comes to Division I sports, students tend to show up in the largest numbers to support the football and hockey teams, but there are always spectators in the form of friends of athletes at every competition. While the University takes great pride in its athletics, students are the true embodiment of scholar-athletes, which is why Colgate has the highest graduation rate—100 percent—of all Patriot League schools.

Dependent on the Individual
Some people are very school spirited, attend lots of varsity games, play sports, IMs, etc, while others haven't explored athletics at all.

D1 Pride
Colgate has good school pride. It can feel like a bigger school tailgate when there are big games. Certain sports like hockey are very good while others like basketball and football can often disappoint fans. Maybe 1/4 of students are athletes.

Football and men's ice hockey
Every sport has its following. Because so many teams have advanced to the Division I finals, they all receive a great deal of support and attention from the students, staff, and administration at Colgate. Overlooked teams include field hockey, soccer, and volleyball.
Colgate really is bursting with school spirit, but when it comes to the athletic competitions, the school has resorted to bribing all but the most diehard fans to attend through the Rowdy Raider program, which incentivizes attendance to many of the weekly sporting competitions. Football and hockey draw big crowds, as does intramural competition, but for most other sports, the fan base is comprised of parents and friends of athletes. Having said that, students take immense pride in their school, and every student has dozens of T-shirts bearing the Colgate name or the number 13—or both.
There's free admission to regular season games with your 'Gate card.
Head up to the Harry Lang XC and Fitness Trails to take on one of the most grueling cross-country courses in the Patriot League.
