College Prowler Take

The dining plan includes five eateries, with the infamous Frank Dining Hall being the biggest and most widely used. Frank offers a large variety of food and plenty of vegetarian options at every meal. The food is satisfying for the first few months, but after a while, picky eaters will find the regular rotations of food predictable and monotonous. The Coop has higher quality food than general Frank fare, but since they serve the same thing every week, there is also little variety. The Edge is the smallest of the dining halls, and all too often serves the typical cheeseburger and fries entree. Because food choice at the Edge is limited, the menu is very hit or miss.

Sophomore students must remain on a meal plan, although they can limit their number of meals per week, and many don’t mind a second year of school food. Because Frank serves as a central dining hall, lazy weekend brunches are a staple to both freshman social life and the rumor mill. Although food is occasionally lacking, the campus dining staff makes a genuine effort to respond to student wishes. Students can also check online menus before swiping their cards.

The dining halls are pretty good. People complain, but Frank is pretty accommodating. The Edge is a fancier sit-down restaurant that you have to book reservations for, but it doesn't cost extra. You can always pick up food from the Coop, which has pre-made sandwiches and a grill that stays open until 2 a.m.

Food at Colgate can be...

Food at Colgate can be hit-or-miss, but the dining staff does a great job trying to provide something for everyone. It can get really repetitive—they always have hamburgers and quesadillas. The cafe-style Coop offers great make-your-own salads and sandwiches, so I eat there pretty often. They also have The Edge Cafe, an on-campus restaurant that is also hit-or-miss.

The dining hall is decent. They have some variety in terms of choices. There are two cafes in addition to the regular dining halls

The food is okay. It's not bad, but it can be very repetitive. If you're here long enough, then you can grow to dislike the food.

Frank is hit or miss. The Co-op is generally good, but as others have said, it is expensive. The Edge is a great idea that's been pretty well executed, but considering they don't change the menu very often, it's hard to get variety (especially if you're picky or a vegetarian). I've been really impressed with Colgate's efforts to go "green" with dining services. Their website has a detailed list of what they're doing. Also, coming from a vegetarian, they do a decent job of providing options without meat, but the vegetarian line in Frank usually leaves something to be desired.

Did You Know?

Every Sunday, Frank Dining Hall offers “Sundae Sunday,” a do-it-yourself ice cream bar with all the fixin’s. This is a major contributor to the infamous Freshman 15!

For special occasions like Halloween and Valentine’s Day, Frank spends hours decorating the dining hall and preparing a special menu. All the employees dress in costume!

Got a birthday coming up? The best cakes around are available, surprisingly, from Frank Dining Hall. Order one by calling (315) 228-7915. (Hint: This is the perfect way for parents to send birthday wishes from afar!)

Food Vendor Day: In mid-April every year, a slew of food vendors invade Frank at lunchtime. Students can choose from dozens of different food companies to sample, and it’s free even without a meal plan.

Free food abounds during finals week. Various student groups sponsor ice cream socials, pizza and wings, and other treats at the Coop.
