Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

For all intents and purposes, when it comes to on-campus housing, Colgate is divided into up the hill and down the hill. Up the hill, you will find the six first-year dorms clustered around the First-Year Residential Quad, offering quick access to the Academic Quad and two of the three dining halls. Down the hill are the University Apartments, the Broad Street Initiative, and the Townhouse Communities, and nestled in the space between are the three sophomore housing complexes. As you grow older, tradition dictates you move farther down the hill and gain a longer walk to your morning classes. That being said, Colgate both guarantees and requires on-campus housing all four years: a traditional dorm for the first year, a suite for sophomore year, and apartments and Broad Street houses (Greek houses and interest houses owned by the University) for junior and senior years. The exception to this lies with the small number of seniors granted permission to live off campus in an apartment or house within the Village of Hamilton.

Overall, students are satisfied with the housing options available to them, and they enjoy the increased privileges and responsibility that come with the move farther down the hill, whether it is a private bathroom in sophomore housing or a full kitchen in junior and senior apartments. Interest housing along Broad Street is also quite popular because of the convenient location on campus and the amenities that come along with these houses, like full industrial kitchens and cozy living rooms. Colgate takes pride in maintaining its buildings, and while these aren’t five-star digs, they suit students just fine.

Dorms

Freshmen dorms aren't too shabby except that curtis rooms are tiny. There are some awesome places to live as a sophomore (more singles in suites available). The townhouses are a bit isolated but extremely nice, new, and HUGE. Apartments are okay. Parker is probably the better of the three.

Pretty Spacious

Freshmen dorms are pretty nice -- Curtis dorms tend to be tiny, but doubles elsewhere and suites are nicer than on most campuses I've seen. The freshman dorms are also really close to academic buildings so you can pretty much wake up five minutes before class if you want.

Hit or Miss

Where I lived my first year, Curtis, was ridiculously terrible. Not only was it the biggest first year dorm (read: the most out-of-control), but the rooms were also the size of closets and the common spaces were constantly a mess. Sophomore year I lived in Parke, which is part of the Bryan Complex. Although this is probably the ugliest building on campus, I loved living here. My room was a huge improvement, size-wise, and the proximity to academic buildings was nice.
