Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

It’s not uncommon to hear students joking about their latest parking fine being put toward the construction of a new dorm on campus. In fact, Campus Safety (or "Campo," as students refer to them) spends much of their day issuing parking violations to those unlucky enough to have misread the tomes of parking regulations. Aside from the ill-fated car parked up the hill before 3:30 p.m. or in an active loading zone, the most common disciplinary action stems from getting caught playing drinking games or smoking weed. The first semester is the most dangerous time for first-years, and it often takes a few run-ins with RAs and Campo for students up the hill to figure out what is acceptable for weekend behavior and what is taboo. While the University instituted a much-discussed points system in 2011, there is still some speculation as to how this system will pan out in the future. As it currently stands, any imaginable infraction, from underage drinking all the way to dealing drugs, is assigned a point value with an associated disciplinary action. This system is steps above the former ambiguous disciplinary policy, but it is more actively enforced than the previous policy.

Generally speaking, Campus Safety exists to keep students safe, and when possible, they tend to let students slide and deal with things in-house as opposed to involving the local police department. Once out of first-year housing, Campo and Residential Life are considerably more lenient and tend to give students their space, as long as students respect property and keep out of trouble.

Oh, the Points System

Since it's so new, we don't really know how well it will work for the students... it seems to be a good idea - if you're caught drinking/drunk you get a couple of points at most. Your parents aren't notified until you get 4 points and, there aren't serious consequences until then. A word of advice: dorms are too small for parties NOT to be busted. Just go to a real party, freshmen. Be smart and you won't get in serious trouble.

Campo: Only There When You Don't Want Them

Campus safety aka campo is not helpful. Colgate just institute a new points system. Any points, and Varsity Athletics is notified if you are an athlete. One point for being underage and in the presence of alcohol. Four points for hosting a party with alcohol for underage students and/or drugs. Four points and your parents are notified. Ten and you're kicked out.

Not Very Strict

The first few weeks of freshman year are when campo is the strictest. RA's tend to write up big dorm pregames/parties since freshman don't really know what's going on and can't get into the bars yet, for the most part. Other than that, campo and hampo(the town police) only really write people up if someone needs to go to the hospital or for drunk driving or open containers. Basically if you aren't obvious, you're fine. The police basically never bust parties other than ones in the townhouses, which people end up stopping having once the frats start having parties.

With having overnight guests, students first have to make sure it's OK with their roommate(s). The only other real stipulation is that a guest's visit may not exceed three consecutive days.
