College Prowler Take
More than 90 percent of Colgate students purchase a computer by their senior year, and the majority arrive with one on freshman move-in day. Although owning a personal computer eliminates the need to trudge to a public lab for every paper and research assignment, it can be more than a simple convenience when the few major labs on campus get crowded. Because the library is particularly populated during exam time, students will have to seek out the lesser-known labs on campus. There are handfuls of them buried in various academic buildings such as Lathrop, Lawrence, and Little. Students who decide to buy should opt for a laptop, to take advantage of the school’s expanding wireless capabilities. The computer network is speedy, but occasional glitches and virus outbreaks have led to one or two chunks of time sans Internet connection. Although students often point fingers at SOURCe and Information Technology Services, for the most part, these organizations keep the system up and running smoothly. It’s a good thing, too, because many professors use the Blackboard system to electronically post assignments and grades. It’s also a good thing for the many Colgate students who pass time by religiously checking Instant Messenger away messages, or surfing facebook.com, the online profile and picture service with more than 1,000 Colgate users.

You should definitely bring your own computer, but it's possible to function without one. There are definitely enough computer labs to be able to find a computer during the day.

The computer labs at Colgate are usually crowded at crunch times, like midterms and finals. Besides that, you can always find a spot. Most people do have their own computers, With Wi-Fi, it is definitely nice to have your own. If you don’t own one, I don’t think it would be a huge problem.

Bring your own Macbook—no one at Colgate uses anything else. But, there are excellent labs if you don't have one. Wi-Fi is terrific, but it occasionally causes headaches. Bring your own printer, too, and be prepared to charge your roommates for ink.
