Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Colgate may not be a shining beacon of diversity, but it is certainly making great efforts to improve its tolerance and inclusivity. In fact, the class of 2015 follows a trend of an increasingly multicultural student body—25 percent self-identify as multicultural—and a commitment toward becoming need-blind in the future is improving socioeconomic diversity. There are still efforts to be made toward increasing all types of diversity on campus and encouraging acceptance of these new populations, but the University is entering a new chapter at Colgate and closing the door on the double-popped-collar days of the past. Sure, you’ll find students from the upper-middle class driving around in brand-new SUVs, but you’re just as likely to find students paying for their own education through work-study and grants.

Though a nondenominational university, there are active religious communities on campus that hold frequent events open to all students, and the LGBTQ community frequently facilitates discussions and events throughout the year. The ALANA (African, Latin, Asian, & Native American) Cultural Center headed up by the Dean of Multicultural Affairs is the hub of ethnic diversity and features salsa dancing classes and an annual music festival at the beginning of each year. In general, the campus attitude is that those students who refuse to accept minority populations on campus are the only students that don’t belong.

Could Be More.

A lot of white upper class, a good degree of other people as well. A group for everyone for sure.

Diversity? a. Acceptance? B.

Colgate has really been increasing diversity as of the last few years. I have friends from India, Malaysia, Kenya, and all over Europe. However, there still remain some racial tensions and struggles with acceptance of different sexual orientations. This is a problem that Colgate students are working together to eliminate.

White Upperclass Prepsters

If you're a girl, you carry a Longchamp bag and wear Hunter boots. If you're a boy, you were boatshoes and Nantucket reds. Although there is a wide range of international students, they are few in number.

Facts

Gay Pride

While there are reported incidents on campus of homophobia and discrimination, there are a number of systems in place to encourage acceptance and to promote a positive environment for the LGBTQ community at Colgate. There are two student organizations on campus, Lambda and Advocates (a gay-straight alliance), that host a number of events open to both the LGBTQ and larger Colgate communities.

Political Activity

If anything, Colgate students tend to be somewhat apolitical, but that hardly indicates indifference toward surrounding communities and those in need. Groups like Amnesty International hold well-attended fundraising events and the Center for Outreach, Volunteerism and Education (the COVE) offers a number of ways to give back to the local community. There is, however, representation from both College Democrats and College Republicans and a number of other groups encouraging political involvement.

Economic Status

Colgate students come from diverse backgrounds, and you're as likely to meet an upper-class prepster driving around a brand-new SUV as you are a student paying for his or her entire Colgate tuition through grants and work-study. While students tend to dress preppy, for the most part, that is where the elitist attitude ends.

Most Common Religions

The active religious communities represent the religious preferences of Colgate's student body, although a majority associates with the University Church, the Newman community, and the Jewish community based out of the Saperstein Jewish Center.

Minority Clubs on Campus

The minority clubs maintain a visible role in campus affairs and host regular social events and lecture series. Groups like Brothers, the Latin American Student Association (LASO), and Sisters of the Round Table (SORT) often join forces with other groups on campus for special events. The ALANA Cultural Center oversees most diversity efforts at Colgate and holds frequent events open to the entire campus community, including leadership workshops and brown-bag lunches.

Did You Know? Dancefest, a twice-annual showcase of Colgate's dance and ethnic groups, sells out within days of tickets going on sale.
