There's a reason Colgate frequently tops the list for "Most Beautiful College Campus in America," and it's not just the landscaping we're talking about. Truth be told, the girls and guys are both attractive and well-dressed, dividing their non-studying time between working out in the gym and standing in front of the mirror. Taking a look around campus, one can find the latest fashions both off the runway and straight out of J. Crew and Vineyard Vines. Oxford button-downs, pearls, the signature Top-Siders and Wellies are standard apparel, but that doesn’t mean students don’t know the value of a good pair of sweatpants.

The male-to-female ratio hovers right around 50/50, meaning an ideal ratio for dating or hookups, and while Colgate isn’t known for its dating scene, there are many long-term couples on campus that are just lower profile than your standard Jug-goer. To be sure, the nightlife—especially the Jug (a steamy cesspool of hormones masquerading as a dance club)—make it easy to find a mate practically any night of the week. Just don't hit up the Jug too often, lest you gain the reputation of a "Jugrat," not exactly a compliment on this campus.

Preppy for the Most Part

The vast majority of Colgate students look they just stepped out of a J Crew ad. Girls are generally very attractive, guys can go either way. Colgate is a hookup school. Don't come here if you're looking for a steady relationship.

Not as preppy as you would think

Colgate is definitely preppy, and has its share of vineyard vine-only sporting students. However, this reputation is misleading. Colgate's version of preppy integrates a much more athletic feel to it. Standard apparel for guys is a button down shirt over sweatpants and timberlands. Girls tend to dress up a bit more, but PJs to class is perfectly acceptable. In a place where wealth and fashion is expected, there really isn't much competition for best dressed and people don't care as much as this website seems to claim.

Social Scene

Students can be summed up in two words: outgoing and involved. Whether it be meetings for one of the more than 170 student organizations or some form of organized sports, there is little downtime on campus.

Hookups or Relationships?

Hookups by and large rule this campus. While there are a number of couples on campus, students quickly learn that at least a sizable plurality of students go out each weekend with the sole objective of finding a mate for the evening. There are a number of couples who started out as random hookups one drunken night at the Jug—so hopeless romantics, there is hope for you. A word to the wise: Colgate is small and one-night stands often hit the rumor mill before daylight the next day.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

Fraternity parties and date parties between fraternities and sororities are great places to meet lots of different people. If you're not part of Greek life, people meet everywhere on campus; in dorm room parties, walking into town on their way to the bars, in class, and as members of student organizations and athletic teams.

Dress Code

Preppy and warm. People generally dress to impress, but there is not a dress code, per se. Patagonia Snap-T's, Oxfords, and leggings are the closest things you'll get to the standard "uniform" on campus.

Did You Know? A number of campus groups bring several music acts to campus each semester, attracting huge crowds and dominating the social scene for that particular evening or afternoon.
