Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Tour guides frequently tell visitors that the last time the blue-light system was used was by a student trying to figure out the score of the Colgate-Cornell hockey game. The takeaway: Colgate is an incredibly safe place. While there is occasional petty crime, students tend to leave their residence doors unlocked, instead relying on the four-button code on the front doors of residence halls or ‘Gate card-restricted entries to protect their valuables. Campus Safety patrols on foot and in marked and unmarked vehicles at all hours of the day, maintaining a very visible presence both in town and on campus, often assisting Hamilton police officers with reports of underage intoxication.

While the guys in gray get a bad wrap, they offer a number of underutilized services and spend most of their days issuing parking violations, unlocking locked dorm rooms and jump-starting broken-down cars. Students walk about town at all hours of the day, both with friends and alone and rarely feel unsafe; part of it is a result of the omnipresent Campus Safety officers, but it’s mostly attributable to the nature of quaint and peaceful Hamilton.

Campo Sucks

I have never felt unsafe on campus, but the campus safety officers aren't really helpful and use every chance they get to get you in trouble.

Very Safe

Since Hamilton is such a small town, I always feel completely safe at Colgate. I walk back to my dorm from the library (a 5-7 min walk) at all hours of the night and occasionally walk to and from town by myself when it's dark; I always feel safe. Plus, if you're not comfortable walking to or from town, you can always take the cruiser (Colgate's bus system). Campo (campus safety) is known to be pretty alert when it comes to partying and drunkness, though, so be careful.

Totally Safe

I have never felt unsafe on Colgate’s campus. It is a small, beautiful, safe place to be. Be warned that Campus Security isn’t too happy ‘bout drinking games, though.
