Advice
- Two of Colgate’s biggest assets are its alumni base and its strong Center for Career Services. The staff at the Center are genuinely interested in helping students find what they want, whether it be an internship on Capitol Hill, job shadowing during the summer, a summer job with a law firm, or permanent placement with a company following graduation. Colgate alumni have great faith in the students at Colgate, and are always informing the staff at the Center with job opportunities and internships in their respective fields. Students in search of employment can network Colgate graduates listed in a database at the Center for job interviews, applications, or simple advice and guidance. The Center for Career Services regularly invites alumni to return to campus, and give seminars and lectures for students interested in their fields. It also encourages students to sign up for networking receptions where they meet Colgate graduates and exchange business information and personal knowledge. • Get comfortable visiting the Center for Career Services—they sincerely want to help. • Visit the Center early, even during freshman year. It never hurts to explore all your options. • If you are unsure of what you want, talk to the staff, they will be able to help you figure out where you need to go. • Utilize the mock interviews and resumé writing sessions! They are held often and are great tools. • Do not be afraid to tell them what you want. The more specific you are, the easier they will be in locating something that fits you best.
