College Prowler Take
Students are divided on the off-campus living situation. Many agree that the hassle of seeking out an apartment, applying for it, and then actually dealing with utilities and rent may not be worth the feeling of independence and ownership. On the other hand, certain off-campus houses and apartments are in great shape, and many students feel like they would miss out if not engaged in the competition for one. Because Hamilton is such a small community, any off-campus residence would still be within about 20 walking minutes of the college. Because the University apartments are well maintained, roomy, convenient, and segregated enough from campus that they escape Colgate’s watchful eye, the novelty of living off-campus may be more important than the actual benefits. Students who decide to pursue off-campus options should begin looking as early as sophomore year. Hamilton has a limited selection of available rentals, so students need to claim their residences. After securing a spot, students can only cross their fingers and hope to be one of the lucky rising seniors permitted to live off-campus. There is no formal assistance for finding housing, and the off-campus parties students attend as underclassmen provide their primary exposure to local living options.

Off-campus housing is only...
Off-campus housing is only available for seniors and only in pre-approved houses. There's a lottery for seniors to live off-campus, and sometimes it's pretty difficult to get housing.

Nope, it's not worth it. After freshman year, sophomore-year housing is disgusting. Either you're stuck in a dungeon of a complex or you have a tiny room somewhere else. Upperclassman housing is farther away from the academic halls, and it takes at least 15 minutes to walk anywhere.

Students at Colgate are not...
Students at Colgate are not allowed to live off campus until senior year, and even then only about 35 percent of the seniors are able to. This may sound terrible to prospective students, but all juniors and the rest of the seniors live in on-campus apartments that are really nice and quite removed from the rest of campus. So even though you wouldn’t technically be able to live ‘off-campus’ until senior year, the apartment complexes make a really great community and a fun place to live. Parties there are always fun, especially since most of your friends live very close by. |

I will tell you that living off campus is going to be one hell of a hike in the snow, considering the Cruiser (shuttle bus) is never on time. |
