College Prowler Take
Although Colgate students offer divided responses as to where Campus Safety devotes most of its energy, be it to issuing parking tickets, tending to burnt-popcorn-induced fire alarms, or letting students into their locked dorm rooms, everyone agrees that the Colgate community feels safe. There are rarely worrisome incidents, so most students do not hesitate to walk alone late at night or leave their dorm room unattended and unlocked. Patrolling Campus Safety officers are practically omnipresent at all hours of the day, ready to handle any problems that may arise. Despite Colgate’s practically nonexistent crime rate, occasional thefts do catch students by surprise. Since security in residence halls is limited to a four-digit door code (often written in sharpie marker on a nearby surface), stay on the safe side and lock up. Campus Safety also makes regular rounds through campus buildings, so dorm room party hosts should keep their rowdy weekends quiet, or risk a write up. Of course, a “write up” usually doesn’t mean anything except attending a Residential Education seminar targeted at the particular offense. Perhaps because the Campus Safety officers don’t deal with any hardened criminals on a regular basis, they are typically a good-natured, helpful, and often an under-appreciated bunch—just don’t park illegally, and mind the loud music!

If you’re a stoner, they hate you, but for normal people, it’s no big deal. But you should lock your door. |

Campus Safety is almost a joke. Reading the police blotter in the newspaper will prove it. It’s mostly full of ‘the alarm went off in this dorm because popcorn was burned in the microwave.’ I’ve never locked my door at Colgate, and I’ve never had anything stolen, or anybody I didn’t know walk in. |

Colgate is by far the safest campus I’ve ever seen. The biggest risk on campus is probably alcohol poisoning, but as long as you and your friends keep an eye out for each other, there usually is not a problem. Campus Safety means well, but they obviously aren’t particularly popular amongst the student body. |

Campus Safety’s number one job is writing parking tickets. There are little worries about crime or stealing, due to the small community nature of the town. |

Personally, I never have felt unsafe on campus, nor have I had any problems with theft, but I know that it can be a problem. Door codes are in effect for most buildings, but anyone can find out the code without too much effort. A student just has to use some common sense and lock their doors. |
