Quick Stats

School Slang
  • Ford: Short for the Josephine Ford Campus, which is the main campus
  • IC: Short for the Imaging Center, which you can find on the sixth floor of the TC
  • Taubonaut: The Taubman Campus was originally called the Argonaut building. GM (General Motors) donated it to the school, and Alfred Taubman donated a lot of money for the renovations. It was therefore named after him, and some people like to call it a hybrid of the sources.
  • TC: "Taubman Center," short for the Alfred A Taubman Center for Art and Design. This is our newest campus, a mile from the Main (Ford) Campus. Everyone calls it the "TC" or the "Taubman."
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Don't expect to sleep much. The course load is intense, but you will be thankful for it later when you're landing that internship or job over someone who went to a state school.
  • Everyone is not as intimidating as they look, especially your professors. If you want to get to know people before school starts, you can look on the school's Facebook page for current students or students that will be attending!
  • If you need to call the police, don't call the Detroit police. Call Wayne State University police. They will respond quicker.
Tips to Succeed
  • Accept the fact that you won't get much sleep if you want to do well. Time management can only do so much sometimes.
  • Be aware of what is going on around you and immerse yourself into extracurricular activities. It's always good to expand your mind with different lectures and events that go on around campus, and extracurriculars look great on your résumé when you're trying to get an internship or job.
  • Critiques can be scary at first, but it's not the end of the world if not everyone likes your work. Don't take them to heart. The comments, feedback, and constructive criticism are about your work, not you!
  • Have a sense of humor. You don't win all the time, but always, always try to.
  • Networking is a huge thing, no matter what major you're in.
  • Work hard, play hard.

You Get Out What You Put in.

CCS really pushes your limits when it comes to innovative/creative thinking. If you put the effort into your work, you will get good results and the teachers I have had have always been very helpful along the process. CCS is a bit different from other art and design school because it has two big majors that aren't offered at other schools: product design and transportation design. Because of this, each student gets a small taste for these fields during foundations. I found it really helpful and it even informed some of my graphic design work. Additionally, because students are diverse in these areas and other majors, getting an opinion on your work from a product design major or transportation design major is always helpful because they do tend to think in a different manner.

Also, I love the flexibility in classes. Just because I am a graphic design major does not mean I can't take woodworking, metal shop, or a photography class. You CAN, and all of your other classes help feed your ideas for your major. The more diverse your art and design practices are, the more innovative you can become with your work. That is what I love most about CCS.

Uniqueness

This school is very credible art school. One of the best they are rated in the world. Great school for many things but mostly the department of Industrial Design and even more specifically, for transportation and automotive design. This is Detroit and it is importatnt to have a great school still remain in the city and especially for automotive related. In Times magazine and the New York Times magazine in 2008, was CCS rated the 2nd hardest in work load from Harvard. The faculty and staff works hard to push their students and the students do the same in being the best. This proves CCS is a credible school by the results in students getting good internships and jobs during and after school.

Facts

Traditions
  • Century Ball: Each spring, everyone gets dressed up and attends the Century Ball with music and food and has a great time together, celebrating the survival of yet another year.
  • End of the Year Picnic: At the end of the year, when spring is in full bloom, CCS hires live entertainment and serves food for everyone to enjoy. It's one of the best times of the year because the stress is mostly gone, and the winter is over!
  • Geek Week: From flight simulators to huge blow-up bounce houses, we celebrate the kid inside of us all. The free shirts are great too!
  • Homework parties: These happen any time throughout the school year. It's great to get together with other people and do homework together.
Urban Legends
  • Because the Yamasaki building is nearly all windows, they had to build the brick wall around the building because people would get into car accidents since they were distracted by the nude models during drawing classes.
  • If you don't do the Peacock Call when the mascot Watson Peacock does it, he will tackle you!
  • The ACB (Art Center Building) where students live is haunted, and there were dead bodies found there when CCS bought it.
  • The Taubman Center is haunted.
  • There used to be a moat filled with water around the Yamasaki building.
Did You Know?
  • CCS is within walking distance of the Detroit Institute of the Arts, Historical museums, main branch of the public library, and Wayne State University, among other sites of interest.
  • As a CCS student, you're allowed to use Wayne State's library (including the Medical and Law libraries), but Wayne State students aren't allowed to use the CCS library!
