Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The atmosphere of Detroit is alive. There's always something going on, and you can feel that with every breath you take. There is a pulse that reverberates through the city and all of its inhabitants. There is a certain energy, and it fuels the creative personalities that exist at CCS.

There are many things to do, but you must always stay on guard. Terrible things do happen here like anywhere else, and you need to be careful and don't venture out alone at night. Detroit is the biggest small town you'll ever go to.

Detroit

Not the most desirable place to live, but Detroit has a lot of things to do including the international auto show for car buffs. The midtown area where CCS is located is generally pretty safe but students don't walk anywhere alone or at night if they are smart.

Cool/Safe Place but Not Much to Do

CCS is a pretty cool school, the students there are "interesting" it's kind of cliquey though students who are of the same major stick together and it's kind of hard to make friends outside of your major, unless someone of another major is in one of liberal arts classes or takes your of your required classes as an elective. Downtown Detroit is pretty nice too but if you stray too far you can easily end up in the wrong part of town. There have been robberies before, I've had 2 friends end up with 3000 dollars worth of camera equipment get held at gun point. Besides a couple of isolated incidents (people not being street smart) the area is safe and Wayne State Police arrive a lot faster than city cops. There is a lot of security There's a couple of clubs around the area but they are kind of..."ghetto" there are some bars too. Otherwise there is not much to do. There really isn't anywhere to shop, the nearest mall is in Dearborn and there aren't any grocery stores in Detroit.

Look Deeper

I feel that Detroit is a really great place and it does have quite a bit of potential, but the potential has yet to be reached. Safety is a major concern for students (and parents) but I feel that CCS does a very good job of telling the students about possible safety concerns and addressing them in ways that are non-worrisome. There is plenty to do around Detroit, you just have to look a bit. The museums, like The Henry Ford, are great to visit and there is certainly a plethora of places to eat in the Detroit Metro area as well.
