Best Time to Look for a Place

You should start looking as soon as possible. As great apartments are hard to find, you don't want to get stuck with something that you're unsure of, but don't jump the gun and pay too much for something either.

Popular Areas There are a lot of great places to live near campus. The Park Shelton at the end of Kirby Street (a block away from the school) is always popular. Campus Village Apartments are great, too. Basically anything in the Midtown area is good. The New Center area is gaining in popularity, and if you can afford to live Downtown, all the power to you. Outside of the Detroit Proper, you'll find some hip places like Ferndale and Royal Oak. These are typically "young" cities that are on the outskirts that require at least a 15–20 minute drive depending on where exactly you live. These two places have a whole life of their own and are considered to be safer, but as always, you should still have your guard up! They are both really hip with a slightly higher rent. Hamtramck and Dearborn are also gaining in popularity, with cheaper rent than Ferndale and Royal Oak.
Average Rents
  • Studio: $650
  • 1 BR: $850
  • 2 BR: $1,100
  • Loft: $1,275

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There is a multitude of places to live in and around Detroit, but you have to weigh the pros and cons. You can stay in the city, close to campus, but if you can't afford a place with all the amenities, 24-hour security, off street parking, and all that jazz on your own, then you need to either bunk up with someone or move outside of the city. There are places that are completely affordable for just one person, but you'll probably be making a sacrifice or two. You may have park on the street, or you may not have 24-hour security. It all depends on what is more important to you.

Many students decide to live with other students and can therefore afford to live in some really beautiful places. Detroit has beautiful mansions that have been made affordable since the economic downturn. Landlords rent them out to students and professors alike.

Great Proximity, Not So Great Parking

I have been living off-campus for 2 years, and I have a great experience so far. I found an apartment my sophomore year about 6 blocks away from campus, around the bigger campus of Wayne State University. This area of Detroit is populated mostly by students, and I had no problem finding an apartment. The cost of living is average, around $500 for a 1 bedroom, making it just as affordable as living in student housing. The landlords understand that you are a student and are very helpful. The only thing that is inconvenient is that parking is hard to find, especially when classes are going on. It may be hard to find, but some apartments around the area do offer parking on a month-to-month basis.

Apartments and Houses Are Cheap!

In Detroit, everything is super cheap. It's kinda crazy. Housing off-campus is easy and good for students. Of course... it's Detroit..

Off Campus Housing Is Hard to Find!

Off campus is housing is hard to find because of the area that the college is located in. It is easy to find an apartment that is twenty minutes from the campus, but it is hard to find a decent/safe place to stay in close proximity to the school.
