College Prowler Take
While most of the teams on campus have their fair share of achievements, only with basketball do you get any real athletic excitement at the College of Charleston. Being very arts-driven, the overwhelming majority of the student population didn’t come here because of a certain team or because of the College’s athletic reputation. The same can be said about the student athletes; they are laid-back, just like “regular” Charleston students and do not strut about campus boasting about their achievements and talents. Cougar fans love to support their teams here anyway. Many basketball games are televised and excited students crowd the Carolina First Arena to be apart of the action. Everyone else joins in cheering from their couches at home as if they were in the stadium bleachers. Top division sports may not be the reigning appeal of Charleston, but there is a place for every kind of athlete, and students can participate both in intramurals and varsity sports. Football fans have satisfied their love of tackles and touchdowns by supporting the USC and Clemson teams, since Charleston doesn’t have a team. Whether or not you are a sports fan, the College or Charleston is the place for you.

One of the first things you’ll find out about athletics here is that we have no football team. But basketball more than makes up for it. |

I wouldn’t say that I’m really into basketball, but I love going to the games. It’s fun even if you have no idea what’s going on. |

The swim team is really good. I would have joined, but I really don’t have the time, unfortunately. I get jealous when I watch them compete. They’re always in the pool, always practicing. |

The girls’ teams don’t get enough recognition here. The volleyball team is really good, and softball is always a good way to spend an hour or two of your life. |

There is no hierarchy here amongst the athletes. Yeah, a girl is going to like a guy who tells her he’s a baseball player, but it’s not like they strut around school like they own the place. That was for high school, thank you. |

Gyms and Facilities
- East Shore Athletic Club - With a College of Charleston ID, students have access to East Shore Athletic Club, with locations downtown at 80 Wentworth St. and in West Ashley. ESAC has treadmills, stationary bikes, elliptical machines, weight machines and dead weights. It also offers classes such as yoga and aerobics, for an additional fee. Another great feature about the Club is that it allows 24-hour access to those looking for a workout at any hour of the day.
- John Kresse Arena - This building, as well as being a venue for spectator sports, has an indoor basketball gym, outdoor tennis courts, a track, and a weight room. Built before the renovations to the Stern Center facilities, Kresse Arena was the most popular and overcrowded place to work out. Now, the crowds have been given more room.
- Stern Center - Remodeled, the Stern Center has a new weight room along with the pre-existing Olympic-sized pool. But be careful, the hours for general pool use are sporadic and limited if you’re not on the swimming and diving teams.

Getting Tickets
Thanks to the recently built Carolina First Arena, students can get into most basketball games without buying tickets ahead of time. But basketball games at the College of Charleston are a big deal and certain games, like those against the Citadel or Davidson, are talked about a week before they happen. Without getting tickets ahead of time (like an hour before the game), you’ll be watching from your couch. Most other sporting events are not difficult to get tickets, and students and spectators can buy tickets at the door.
Most Popular Sports
Basketball and baseball——these are pretty much the only two sports CofC students care to watch.
