Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Breaking news: College dining hall food is not mom's home cooking, and it never will be. That being said, there are some decent options for eating on campus. Liberty Fresh Food Company is a student favorite, and once your student ID is swiped inside Liberty, you can eat to your heart’s content. Most freshmen eat at Liberty every weekday and so do many of the upperclassmen. Short on time? The Hungry Cougar makes pretty good sandwiches and always has pizza and salad, as well as a hot meal. Another meal plan option is the Champ Card. The Champ Card gives students access to a great variety of restaurants around Charleston, which are easy to get to regardless of where you are living, and it costs about the same as the College’s meal plan.

Most students agree that a combination of Dining Dollars, meals, and the Champ Card is the way to go. The Champ Card is good for satisfying cravings for Bull Street Gourmet’s delicious sandwiches or Caviar and Bananas' build-your-own salads. Dining Dollars work best for those on the run, who want to snack on sushi from "Grab & Go" or anything that is quick. When students do have the time for a sit-down breakfast, lunch, or dinner, their good old Liberty meals are there to feed them. Whatever your needs are for dining at the College of Charleston, something can be arranged with the limited but sufficient options provided by campus housing.

The Food Choices Seem Like the Same Every Week

But it's helpful to have a mixed dining plan so you can eat on campus and off campus.

Dining Halls

There are 2 main dining halls that your meal plan applies to, and in addition there is a food court(that includes Chick-fil-a, Quiznos, and Jole Mole) that you can use dining dollars at. The two main dining halls serve similar foods. There is a pizza line, a salad bar, and a sandwhich line at each of them. In Liberty Dining Hall, the larger of the two, has a stir fry line, a pasta line, some sort of ethnic food(usually Asian or Mexican), a "home cooked" line, and a fast food line. Cereal, bagels, waffles, and dessert are offered at all times during the day at both dining halls. The food is decent, some days are better than others. The best decision, if you are a freshman, is to get 15 meals/week to use at the two main halls and 100 dining dollars to use at Chick-fil-a or Quiznos. They tend to slack on variety on the weekends, so I would advice eating out or using dining dollars to eat.
