College Prowler Take

Some students at Charleston have horror stories, some have no stories, and some are just “smart” about doing what they want to do, yet probably aren’t allowed to do. Overall, students seem to think that Public Safety on campus is pretty relaxed, and they have their priorities in order. Charleston students are prioritized as well; the First-Response Unit is a great example of how students care about the safety of their peers on campus. Likewise, Public Safety officers are more concerned with the welfare of their students than with what they’re drinking and smoking. That’s why bags are checked when entering the dorms after a certain time at night. Public Safety, one must remember, is a team of real police officers, who have seen much worse than any college student could conjure up, and in most cases, they use their judgment and experience to decide what authoritative steps should be taken.

Experience has taught Charleston students that yes, you can get away with a lot of things in the dorms. Credit is due to students’ craftiness, not to the lax ways of Public Safety or because they have turned a blind eye. Don’t take Public Safety’s leniency for granted. They realize that college students have a degree of self-control and judgment, and when things look like they may be getting dangerous, they will be there to help you or hand out consequences. Public Safety is doing their job, regardless of how they appear to students. Lax or overbearing, they can be trusted to get involved when they are needed. Just don’t test their patience. If the officers see a threat, they will take action, so be careful.

Be discreet and smart about everything you do. Consequences can get pretty harsh for underage drinking, etc. You don't want to risk losing housing mid-year with no refund.

These policies are very strict. If you are found in violation of the alcohol policy twice, you are suspended for the semester. If you are found in violation of the drug policy, you are suspended for a semester.

Since every upperclassman lives off campus, just do your thing there. Campus police are tough, so don't even risk it. The dorms have fire alarms that go off about two times a week, and those usually allow Public Safety to do a quick search of each room. Don't even think about it!

We all got away with our fair share of mishaps dealing with alcohol and small violations last year. Just don't get caught with anything serious. One strike with pot, and you're out.

They are very strict. If you're found with drugs, you get kicked out of school for the rest of the semester, and possibly for an entire school year. People can also get alcohol violations if they are drinking underage or if they are legal and drinking with minors. Noise violations are pretty strict, too, especially during exam time. The best bet is to party and do illegal activity OFF campus, if you're into that, of course.
