College Prowler Take

The administration realizes that in order to be competitive, students must have access to the latest technologies. C of C is constantly updating its computer systems and network servers, not only for security purposes, but also to provide its student body with the most up-to-date computing available and the quickest network speed possible. This includes Ethernet connections and wired classrooms, along with a wireless network available at various locations. Many instructors now use C of C’s WebCT system to post class notes, assignments, messages, and grades that are easy for students to access from any computer location, regardless of whether you own one or not.

Some students complain about crowded computer labs or occasional viruses that prevent them from doing schoolwork, but these are usually the ones who wait until the last minute to complete their assignments. Also, the school has adopted a stricter policy on file trading due to the strain it puts on the network servers and to avoid the possibility of copyright infringement lawsuits. This new enforcement helps to speed up the network. In addition to these new policies, the systems have been upgraded as well, continuing to make the network quicker. Depending on your major, having your own computer is not a necessity at C of C, but it’s nice to have the convenience of checking your e-mail, printing out assignments, or communicating via Facebook in the comfort of your room.

Students should definitely bring their own computer. Wired and wireless Internet connections are available in all the residence halls, and you can always find a free computer at the library. Some of the residence halls have computer labs as well, but there is no available printing there. The library gives you free printing for up to 300 pages a semester.

If you have your own computer you definitely bring it. Computer labs are available all over campus and can be crowded sometimes. The Wi-Fi is all over campus and is free, so it's really nice.

There are tons of computers in the Addlestone Library and a handful in the Stern Student Center. The library gets crowded at exam time, but I can always find a place. Practically everyone has their own computer, which is nice when you have homework online or papers and don't want to walk to the library. The dorms aren't wireless.

I love my computer. With classes that assign 20-page term papers, it’s good to have your own computer, because it’s one thing to work your butt off for a class, but to spend all your time in the library working your butt off? No thanks.

I’ve seen a lot of viruses on our network here. I’ve gotten two viruses so far at this school. Be careful about what e-mails you open. The school’s network somehow makes it easier for people to contaminate lots of people at one time.
