Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Alcohol and weed are the most common drugs used by students at Charleston, but as with most college campuses, students who really care about their education will do their best to stay away from anything more serious (i.e. cocaine or acid). Also like most campuses, it’s not hard for students to find marijuana (it’s practically not even considered real “drug use”) or any other substance they might want to get into. Many students find that drugs are not a dominant force on this campus despite growing talk that cocaine is becoming a popular accessory to College of Charleston life. Drugs are passed around at parties and are used in the residence halls, but there is no pressure to use them. Alcohol, on the other hand, is a different story. Many students think that getting a little wild with drinking is a normal part of the college experience.

Yes, college is the place for experimentation and risks, but anyone serious enough about their career to stay in school all four years stays away from substances that could jeopardize their future. Students who are willing to make cocaine a frequent activity don’t stay at C of C for long. Most students who run into trouble there do so because of alcohol and irresponsibility. Abusers of drugs and alcohol exist at Charleston like they do on any other campus, but then again so do the students who choose to stay away from them. If you’re not into the drinking or drug scenes, you’re sure to find some similar people to hang out with.

Party Scene

A+

Partying at CofC is really popular, which is okay with me because I love to go out and have a good time. My group of friends love to go to the bars and party with different frats. A lot of people at CofC don't party, so peer pressure really isn't a big deal, it all depends on who you hang out with. Drugs are somewhat popular, though it's mostly weed which a lot of my friends smoke regularly. Again, it all just depends on your specific group of friends.

Typical.

C-

If you know the right people, it seems possible to get almost anything on campus - probably due to the ridiculous crime rate in the city itself. Underage drinking is everywhere, but that is to be expected on a college campus. Pot use is much higher than I expected; I know several people that smoke in the residence halls and have been doing so for months. People speak openly about using Adderall and other ADHD drugs prior to important exams or for studying.
