College Prowler Take

Students feel that, for the most part, the amount of facilities provided by the College of Charleston is suitable, and the school is making further attempts to accommodate its students. Newly built residence halls will allow housing for the growing influx of students. The recently built Liberty Residence Hall and George Street Apartments, as well as the new arts and science buildings that are currently under construction, show that the College is making its presence further known within the city. Also recently built, the Carolina First Arena and the Patriot’s Point Athletic Complex are testaments to the College’s transition into NCAA Division 1 and its further developing sports programs.

Sometimes it may seem that the College of Charleston has tried to cram too many things into a small amount of space. The Stern Center with its many facilities is an example of this; if there were only one building that could be considered the “central” building on campus, this would be it. The arts center is spacious and includes a courtyard that can be enjoyed by all students, not just artists. With the exception of relatively new buildings (‘new’ meaning built within the last 100 years), the facilities that have stood in Charleston for more than 200 years are the ones used by the College. Even on campus, where the city has seen the most architectural change, the sights are pleasing to the eye.

The facilities at College of...

The facilities at College of Charleston are always really nice. The library is amazing and so up-to-date. The food courts are really good sometimes, and the dorms are really nice and spacious. I don't really know about the athletic facilities too much because I don't really go to see basketball, and I run outside. When I do workout inside, the Stern Center fitness place is really nice to go to.

The College of Charleston campus...

The College of Charleston campus is located in the heart of downtown Charleston. There is limited space, but the buildings are wonderful. The origional school house Randolf Hall is the centerpiece of the city, and it is heavy with tradition and grandure. The new buildings are breathtaking and completely modern, yet the origional buildings feel like a flashback to the 1700's. A perfect combination.

The workout gym is too small, but the college offers free gym membership to other gyms in and around the city. The arena is beautiful and new and great for basketball games. The library is clean, quite, fairly new, and very large. It is very spacious, and many students study in the library in groups.

The new library is amazing. It is...

The new library is amazing. It is huge and has an awesome computer lab and a variety of spaces to study such as study rooms, big comfortable chairs, tables, and nooks and crannies. The gym in the student center is kind of small, so this year they implemented that all students get a free membership to ESAC, which is a local gym downtown, to offset the small size of the other gym. The student center is brand new and has a great food court, swimming pool, gym, and game room.

If you’re not on an athletic team, the facilities here can be frustrating. The pool hours for general use are ridiculous, and unless you’re on the team, you can hardly ever use it.

Facts

What To Do on Campus

When not in class, students can use the fitness center, grab a bite to eat at any of the dining halls, see a play in the Simons Center for the Arts, throw a Frisbee in the library courtyard, play a game of pool at the Stern Center, view an art exhibition at the Halsey Gallery, listen to a guest lecturer, or relax and listen to music on the Cistern in front of Randolph Hall——all without ever leaving campus.

Favorite Things To Do

The center of campus, the Cougar Mall, between Maybank Hall and the Robert Scott Small building, is a popular place for students to hang out between classes, and tables are usually set up by campus organizations such as Greek life, athletic teams, academic clubs, and volunteer organizations. Napping on the Cistern or the library courtyard is always a popular activity. The Stern Center plays host to live music functions and cultural events with free food! Several buildings on campus hold poetry readings, lectures, debates, and films.

Bowling on Campus

  • None

Movie Theater on Campus

  • Places such as The Sottile Theater, The Education Center, Maybank Hall and The Simons Center for the Arts periodically show movies—some educational, some artsy, and some mainstream. When the weather is nice the Stern Center Gardens is also a prime location for mainstream movie showings (movies that just came out, ex: Sex and the City) sponsored by CAB (Cougar Activities Board). The Student Film Festival, held in Physicians Auditorium, is also a popular event held on campus.

Bar on Campus

  • None, but there are plenty of bars within close proximity---King Street is just a block away.

Coffeehouse on Campus

  • Java City in Addlestone Library
  • There are also four Starbucks, Kudu Coffee House, and City Lights Coffee, all within a short walk of campus.

Did You Know?

In 2007 and 2008, nine new facilities were built and three more are currently under construction, including Dixie Plantation—862 pristine acres located 17 miles south of Charleston. At the site, the College plans to build an environmentally sustainable teaching, research, and recreational facility for the sciences and liberal arts.
