Movie Theater on Campus
Places such as the Sottile Theater, the Education Center, Maybank Hall, and Simons Center for the Arts periodically show movies-some educational, some artsy, and some mainstream. When the weather is nice, the Stern Center Gardens is also a prime location for mainstream movie showings sponsored by CAB (Cougar Activities Board). The Student Film Festival, held in Physicians Auditorium, is also a popular event held on campus.
"Green" Initiatives
CofC has many green projects and issues on the table. In terms of transportation, the College offers reduced parking rates for those who share rides together. The City bus system is free for the College community. Plus, all maintenance cars are electric, and light bulbs are compact fluorescent, which is better for the environment.
School Slang
  • Chucktown, Chaz/Chas, Chuck: Other names for Charleston
  • The College, The College of Knowledge: Other names for the College of Charleston
  • The Coug, The Shitty Kitty: Nicknames for the Hungry Cougar
  • Crosstown: A road that divides downtown and "the other side of Crosstown"
  • The Gravel Pit: A group of student houses on St. Philip Street that have gravel parking behind them. Parties are thrown at the Gravel Pit almost every weekend.
  • Namia: An apartment complex accessed through King Street. It looks like a normal building, but once you go down a hallway and open a door, it takes you into a courtyard surrounded by balconies and apartments. This is a great place for keg parties.
  • Y'all: You all. Even Northerners say it.
Traditions
  • The Booze Cruise: A popular event among students, the Booze Cruise is a boat party that occurs a couple times a month for students to basically get drunk and socialize while cruising around the Battery.
  • Graduating on the Cistern: Students at the College of Charleston pass through the arch at Porter's Lodge on their first day and enter the Cistern yard to officially sign "the book." Inscribed in Greek on the arch are the words "Know Thyself." Upon graduation in the spring, students exit the Cistern yard by passing underneath the same arch and out into the world.
Urban Legends
  • Berry Hall is rumored to be haunted by the ghosts of little girls that lived there more than 100 years ago when it was an orphanage, not a dorm.
  • In the 1970s, there was a war between Pi Kappa Alpha and Tau Kappa Alpha that apparently ended in both fraternities being kicked off campus.
  • The Cistern was once a popular place for fraternities to torment their pledges before it was filled with cement and turned into a grassy platform in front of Randolph Hall.
Favorite Things To Do
The center of campus known as the Cougar Mall (between Maybank Hall and the Robert Scott Small Building) is a popular place for students to hang out in between classes, and tables are usually set up by campus organizations such as Greek life, athletic teams, academic clubs, and volunteer organizations. Napping on the Cistern or the library courtyard is always a popular activity. The Stern Center plays host to live music functions and cultural events with free food! Several buildings on campus hold poetry readings, lectures, debates, and films. When not in class, students can use the fitness center, grab a bite to eat at any of the dining halls, see a play in the Simons Center for the Arts, throw a Frisbee in the library courtyard, play a game of pool at the Stern Center, view an art exhibition at the Halsey Gallery, listen to a guest lecturer, or relax and listen to music on the Cistern in front of Randolph Hall-all without ever leaving campus.
