Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

With fewer than 30 percent of undergraduates involved in Greek life, the frat and sorority scene at Charleston is pretty much contained within a certain group. There is little to no pressure to rush (join Greek life), and there are pros and cons to the Greek system. While many students feel that it provides invaluable leadership opportunities as well as the guarantee of an active social life, there are also many students opposed to a system based on exclusivity. However, the only people that really have strong opinions about sororities and fraternities are the ones involved. Most "independents" don't mind the Greeks, and most Greeks don't look down on the independents for not joining.

It seems the further south you go, the more prevalent Greek life is on campus, so the traditions and loyalties of Greek organizations at Charleston exist everywhere else. At Charleston, pledging and rushing are easy opportunities to make friends on campus, but they are certainly not the only ways. The College of Charleston celebrates variety and the diversity of its students’ interests, and sponsors many organizations where students can come together. Overall, the Greek organizations at Charleston are nothing spectacular. Eventually, they become a natural part of the landscape, just like a sports team or any other student organization on campus.

It's There but It's Not That Big of a Deal

There is a scene and there are plenty of events and parties but ultimately you do not have to be a part of a fraternity/sorority to have fun at this school and people won't judge you if you're not.

If your not one of us....

Greek life is a major part of social life on campus. Some who are not involved still have fun but those are only a few GDIs and they are most likely friends with people in greek life. If your not part of greek life I don't know what you would even do. Its a huge part of campus but not as intense as a bigger state school like clemson or USC. Every one should Go Greek!!

Greek Life Is Pretty Big

If you're looking to get into a soriety or frat, you've got a pretty good chance of getting into one. Near McConnell dorm there are 5 or 6 frat houses, and there are tons of soriety houses around campus too. It seems like they're always doing some sort of activity, and they do Rush Week and all that. If you're looking for Greek life College of Charleston definately has it.
