Social Scene
Meeting people can be tough, and many freshmen have claimed that they run into a lot of snobby girls and guys or have roommates that go home every weekend. But as at any college, finding your niche in the first couple of months is hard. Joining a sorority or fraternity is not the only way to meet people. Academic clubs, intramural and club sports, class, or work are also good places to meet people, as well. The key to forming friendships is universal: bite the bullet and be friendly. Everyone else wants to meet people just as badly as you do, so don't be afraid to put yourself out there.
You can meet just about anyone at a party or at a bar, but meeting and forming relationships with people can be easily accomplished through academic means. Study groups, extracurricular activities, and late nights at the library give way to more than ample opportunity for a casual hookup, a torrid affair, or something long-term. If you're in the market, hotties can be found pretty much year round with the exception of two or three brief months in the winter. Warm weather seems to be code for "wear as little clothing as possible," and all the guys have to do is sit back and watch the fake tans stroll by in their tiny ruffled skirts. Meanwhile, the girls long for a Charleston boy who will shower and cut his hair.
Hookups or Relationships?
Personalities vary from person to person, as do their methods of approaching members of the opposite sex. Some girls at the College of Charleston stay with cadets from the Citadel, who are in desperate need of some female attention. Many girls feel as if there are no guys at the College and search for guys who don't go to CofC but live in Charleston. Due to the 2-to-1 female-to-male ratio at CofC, many guys are aware of the abundance of women and are simply looking for a hookup, but this cuts both ways. Some Charleston guys are boyfriend material, but they are hard to find. Commitment-free hookups are as common here as the typical keg party, but finding someone to date is attainable-you'll just have to work hard for it.
Dress Code
The College of Charleston has two distinct styles: trendy/bohemian and preppy. The trendy/bohemian types can be seen wearing colorful prints, skinny jeans, funky sweaters, boots, loud jewelry, and outrageous sunglasses, while the preppy types often sport cardigans, polos, Seven jeans, boat shoes, pearls, and Croakies. The typical Southern boy outfit is a Guy Harvey T-shirt, short khaki shorts, and New Balance sneakers, while the typical bohemian boy might wear a graphic T-shirt, corduroys, and Chacos.
When it comes to nightlife, expect to see a lot of girls (likely freshmen) overdressing in stilettos and extremely short dresses, while the guys seem to make absolutely no effort whatsoever. If you see a guy dressing to impress, he is most likely gay or going to some formal fraternity function.
