Emphasis on the Entire Student Body

No football team and sports are not emphasized so priorities, in my view, are in line with what higher education should be focused on!

The Best 4 Years of My Life

I was a biology major so school was tough, but I got A's-B's and still had an awesome experience outside the class room. I had 2 jobs and met a lot of great people outside of the student body. I could walk and bike to everything. Restaurants and bars are amazing, there is always entertainment and art/music/athletic events. Would not change my experience for the world. Go!

Campus

The most unique part of CofC life is living in such a historical city. Since it usually hosts a huge amount of tourists, there are plenty of restaurants and nightlife. Most students have fake i.d.'s and go to clubs instead of house parties. They have a great career website to help students and alumni find work though. I'd say awesome environment, but not much in the way of special programs or events.

Facts

Traditions
  • The Booze Cruise: A popular event among students, the Booze Cruise is a boat party that occurs a couple times a month for students to basically get drunk and socialize while cruising around the Battery.
  • Graduating on the Cistern: Students at the College of Charleston pass through the arch at Porter’s Lodge on their first day and enter the Cistern yard to officially sign "the book." Inscribed in Greek on the arch are the words "Know Thyself." Upon graduation in the spring, students exit the Cistern yard by passing underneath the same arch and out into the world.
Urban Legends
  • Berry Hall is rumored to be haunted by the ghosts of little girls that lived there more than 100 years ago when it was an orphanage, not a dorm.
  • In the 1970s, there was a war between Pi Kappa Alpha and Tau Kappa Alpha that apparently ended in both fraternities being kicked off campus.
  • The Cistern was once a popular place for fraternities to torment their pledges before it was filled with cement and turned into a grassy platform in front of Randolph Hall.
