Overall ExperienceWhat's This?

Most students acknowledge the fact that at the College of Charleston, they’re experiencing something unique and rare. Not only is the city an interesting and fascinating place, but the years students will spend at CofC will be radically different than they would be at most other schools. Many schools are not located in the heart of a city as Charleston is, and many schools do not preserve the old while combining it with the new, the way the College of Charleston strives to. Although CofC may not have a well-known reputation for superior academics or sports, both the latter and the former are among the greatest in the nation, and many students come to care less and less about the acclaim that Charleston receives.

One cannot truly understand the appeal and rarity of attending the College of Charleston until they have been here awhile, and though students do transfer out for various reasons (including simply not being happy as a CofC student), those who do remain here for all of their college years look back on their memories with nothing but contentment and pride. Charleston does its best to encourage its students and residents to enjoy the time they spend here, and students here will never be lacking in opportunity for their career or education goals. Though it may be small and laid-back, the College of Charleston has many different qualities to be proud of and the students themselves have said that Charleston has become their home.

Don't Let the Marketing Fool You

Don't let the marketing fool you. Charleston seems like a great place to live and learn but you quickly realize how dull and boring it is after a few weeks into your first semester. The city is small and offers little to those who are under 21. Living on campus is a headache because you are forced to sign in and sign out all visitors who you bring to your dorm. If you fail to do so you will be slapped with a violation. There is very little freedom when living in dorms, and you may receive an RA who has very little to no sympathy for basic college kid mishaps. Such as noise violations, alcohol, etc.

I graduated in 2010 and LOVE THIS SCHOOL!!!

Let me start off by saying that I absolutely love everything about College of Charleston. It is a fantastic school in a superb location. If you have yet to visit this school-make a trip!!!!! Once you see it (like I did), you will instantly fall in love.I graduated in May 2010 (in a sorority and majored in Psych/Spanish). I had the best 4 years of my life there. Being from the Northeast, it is always a treat when I can squeeze in a trip to Charleston. Like I said, I am almost obsessed with this school and I feel like anyone who has graduated from there feels the exact same. My only initial concern was being from the North, but there are SOOO many people from VA, MA, NY, CT, MD and even as far south as FL that I never EVER felt out of place. In fact, none of my "close" friends are in-state.

If anyone is saying this is a "drinking" school-you're wrong. Of course there are bars down the street (as well as fabulous shopping and awesome restaurants-hey, it is a TOURIST town!)....but ANY school is a "drinking" school. It is COLLEGE! I never felt overwhelmed by the drinking by any means nor was I ever distracted.

My only recommendation (besides visiting) is that you AVOID the dorm COLLEGE LODGE at all costs!!!!!!! I hated it it is absolutely disgusting/dirty/never has hot water/didn't have a functional toilet. Take my advice on this one. Stick to McAlister and even Berry is not bad at all (it is like a hotel).

Feel free to contact me personally.

Changing for the Better

In the three years that I've been here, I've witnessed the student body growing more open to diversity and progression. It's a beautiful school in the middle of the Bible belt, but there is an acceptance that is prevalent throughout the campus and the city itself.
