Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

When students say "you can walk everywhere," you really can walk "everywhere." A good pair of comfortable tennis shoes or flip-flops will serve you well in Charleston. Buses around downtown are needed very little; however, CARTA (the bus system) is free to CofC students, so if the need to take a bus somewhere arises, you are entitled to a complimentary ride. It’s true: walking is the most common means of transportation, and when it's not, students opt to ride a bike or longboard. The only complaints most students generally have are the unreliable bus system and the pricy cab fare to the airport. The airport is located in North Charleston and is a necessary means to get home for many out-of-state students. It takes about 20 minutes to get there by car, and cab fares are around $25, so getting a ride to the airport with one of your buddies is ideal.

Charleston has all of the transportation it needs for a city of its relatively small size. A reliable public transportation system like Washington, D.C.’s Metro would be unnecessary for a city like Charleston, but the bus system isn’t perfect (reading the schedule is like reading hieroglyphics), and sometimes people without cars feel stranded. Take advantage of the flat and small peninsula because walking to your destinations is a great way for students, or anyone, to explore the city. Whether you’re walking, driving, riding, or flying, Charleston has whatever type of transportation you need, however unlikely it is that you might use it.

Parking Is a "B"

Public Transportation is not that convenient. SInce the campus is downtown there are LOTS of places you can walk to and do not need a car, exceptions are major grocery store, wal-mart, and the beach. Supposedly there is a shuttle bus to the beach, but I never took it. Buses are a little sketchy and take twice as long. If you opt to have a car parking is very expensive. Cheapest parking is to have an apartment with parking included. Also off campus garages can be less expensive and more convenient than on campus parking.

Walking Distance

Being in the heart of downtown Charleston allows you to walk to all of your classes, the library, and historic King Street shopping. Although, when warm weather hits EVERYONE wants to go to the beach for some sun. You need a car to get to the beach. I assume that taking a taxi the 20-20 min drive to the beach can be very pricey, so i suggest catching a ride with upperclassmen friends who have cars or taking a carta bus (its cheap, but the ride takes way longer than it should).

Transportation

You can pretty much walk anywhere. However, if you want to go to the beach there are is no buss system and you would have to take a cab which could get expensive or use and upperclassmen's car.
