Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There is no question that basketball is the most popular sport on campus. Holy Cross is in the Patriot League, the champion of which is guaranteed a place in the NCAA tournament. Although Holy Cross hasn’t won the tournament since 1948, the school is now focusing on strengthening both its men’s and women’s programs. Football is also popular, but it’s mostly about the tailgating. Although Holy Cross hasn’t fielded a competitive team in about 30 years, alumni flock to football games and tend to stick around for the first half—while there is still a chance of a Crusader victory—and leave once defeat is imminent.

Club and intramural sports at Holy Cross are somewhat spotty, and generally operate on student interest. The men’s rugby team, a stalwart club sport, was disbanded in fall 2003 for a period of five years. Other club teams vary in activity—although most dormant teams can easily be re-started by a few enterprising students. Many of the club sports, which are run out of the Student Programs office and not affiliated with the Athletic Department, also function as intramural leagues. Unofficial, though popular, intramural organizations include basketball and softball leagues, which generally spring up every so often. Enterprising groups of students often play touch football on the Hart lawn, too.

Depends

If we are facing a big name school for a sport like football, hockey, basketball (not sure about spring sports yet) then we will get a huge crowd. We usually do all right though in general fan support. Our teams are decent too. Hockey is probably the best. Rumor is we might go Hockey East soon.

Great Team, Hard to Do Workload.

I never did Athletics because I had no free time! I heard many athletes struggled in the Pre-Med program because they had no time to study/ do their workload, but some did successfully do it. Most of those, however, were not like me that had to work on-campus for about 25hrs a week and still live off-campus. So everyone is different. The athletics I heard were very competitive and really good. Just depends how much dedication and free time you can afford.

School Spirit

Holy Cross has a lot of school spirit. There’s even one day a year—Purple Pride Day—that’s dedicated to enlivening school spirit. School spirit is most evident at athletic events, particularly football and basketball games. Holy Cross’s every-other-year away football game at Harvard always attracts a large Crusader crowd. The bleachers at basketball games are usually filled with a sea of students wearing purple T-shirts. Most students sport at least one garment of Holy Cross garb—usually either a sweatshirt of a baseball hat. For a small school, Holy Cross has tons of spirit.

Getting Tickets

Tickets can be purchased the day of the game for football and basketball, unless the game is particularly important. In cases such as this, ticket reservations can be made. Tickets are generally free for students.

Best Place to Take a Walk

Try the Hill workout. Walk from the bottom of campus at Fitton Field all the way to the top at the Hart Center.
