Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The Holy Cross computer network usually runs pretty well, but during periods of high use, it tends to slow down. ITS is constantly working to upgrade the school’s Internet connections, and while having to wait an extra two seconds for a Web site to load is annoying, it is by no means the end of the world.

There are many small and relatively unknown computer labs around campus. The main, 24-hour lab in O’Kane Hall remains the most popular for student use and is usually very social at all hours. For a more quiet and solitary computer experience, departmental labs are often the best. The physics, psychology, chemistry, and math departments all have relatively underused computer labs. Although these labs aren’t technically open 24 hours a day, the night custodian can often be persuaded to allow hard-working students to stay past midnight, when buildings are generally locked. Computers earmarked speci?cally for checking e-mail and quick use are located in the Hogan Campus Center and the main reading room of Dinand. The computer system at Holy Cross is de?nitely above average. The network is pretty good, and the services available on the Internet are exactly what students and professors need. However, the network can be somewhat sluggish, and the school should consider investing in more computers for computer labs.

Computers & Laptops

Most of the student body have their own laptop, so the use of computers at the libraries or labs are only use when you're printing work out. Or for research sometimes. But it's especially crowded when it's time to choose for classes.

Technology at Holy Cross

The equipment in libraries and labs are state-of-the-art, printing system in the library is very efficient, both macs and pcs are accommodated, the only downside to technology at the college is occasional interruptions in wireless access in the freshman dorms.

The Computers at Holy Cross are far from perfect. The servers crash occasionally preventing students from even using the school computers. Almost all of the computers run on Windows Vista software or something older (I'm not a mac person, but they have only a handful of them). Bring your own computer.

Did You Know?

Holy Cross has an extensive online academic system. The school uses the Moodle system, which allows professors to post course materials online and provides chat room forums for students in a class to discuss outside of the classroom.

In addition to Moodle, the STAR academic system allows students to access all of their transcripts and grades without visiting the Registrar’s Of?ce, and it has made registering for classes much easier. Finally, the E-Res (Electronic Reserve) system allows reserve reading for classes to be posted online. Many professors now scan reading assignments onto the E-Res system, thus saving students the trip to the reserve room at the library.
