College Prowler Take

While most students agree that Holy Cross’s facilities are pretty good, the availability of cardio machines at the gym is a common gripe. The Hart Center is well equipped—it has cardiovascular machines, free weights, weight machines, a stretching room, and offers aerobic classes—but there isn’t enough equipment to go around. At peak times—such as mid-morning and late afternoon—the gym is usually packed, and there is often a wait of more than an hour for an elliptical machine or treadmill. Although quite modern, the gym needs to be expanded to meet the needs of a physically fit student body. Another common complaint is the use of the Hogan Campus Center. A frequent criticism is that the Hogan Center is more of an administrative center than a student center.

The facilities on campus are pretty good. Although the Wellness Center at the gym is often crowded, it is a state-of-the art facility. On the flip side, Hogan is often used for non-College-related activities, and the school could make the campus center more welcoming and homey for students. As it is now, most students just pass through it in order to check their mail and go to the ATM. The campus itself is impeccably maintained. Lawns are kept neatly mowed, and flowers always seem to appear at exactly the right time. The buildings on campus, many dating from the 1890–1920 era, have been adapted to modern use and really don’t show their age. It would be difficult to find a bathroom on campus containing any bad odors or writing on the walls. In all, the campus facilities are great, though they could be altered to more effectively fit the needs of the current student body.

There is a great workout athletic center. The campus food places are slightly lacking. The library and student center are both great.

Dinand Library at Holy Cross is...

Dinand Library at Holy Cross is beautiful, especially the main reading room. However, there is not nearly enough seating to accommodate the number of people that is always there. There is also the science library and Rehm Library, which provide additional options for students. Holy Cross does not have a library that is open 24 hours a day though. The gym is sub-par, as it does not have nearly enough equipment for the number of students.

The facilities are very nice. I haven't been to the athletic facilities all that much because I don't really care for sports, but what I've seen is state-of-the-art. The library is very cool, as well, though not literally, unfortunately.

The Hart Center provides an Olympic-sized swimming pool, ice-skating rink, basketball courts, racquetball courts, and an excellent weight training/aerobic machine room. My own personal peeve is the inaccessibility of basketball courts. During certain sports seasons, it can be difficult for students to find available basketball courts. The school also has outdoor tennis courts and a good track for student use.

The student center is fair at best. It houses a coffeeshop, the bookstore, the post office, eating facilities, a small grocery/drug store, and various school offices. The facilities themselves are fine, but the atmosphere is lacking. Overall, it feels too antiseptic—like a hospital or office building—for it to be a real hang-out place for students.

Favorite Things To Do

There’s usually enough to do on campus. The Campus Activities Board, CAB, is a student-run organization charged with the task of keeping the campus entertained. CAB generally organizes or co-sponsors some sort of activity every weekend, from dances to bands to hypnotists. The two theater groups on campus—the theater-department run Fenwick Theater and the student-run ACT (Alternate College Theater)—each perform at least two shows a year, and the HCCO (Holy Cross Chamber Orchestra) usually puts on one or two performances per semester. Lectures from respected political, religious, and academic figures are also frequent. Holy Cross and the other schools in Worcester maintain the “Social Web” Web page, which contains listings of events at all colleges, and is available on the Holy Cross Web site.

Coffeehouse on Campus

  • Cool Beans, on Hogan 1, is a great place to hang out, catch up on gossip, do some light reading, or watch the campus stroll by. The new Cool Beans 2 (CB2) is located in Stein and is the perfect place to stop for pastries and coffee on your way to class.

Bar on Campus

  • The Pub, located in the Crossroads area of the Hogan basement, is a popular hangout for students over 21.

Movie Theater on Campus

  • The brand new Seelos theatre was renovated in 2008 and hosts a number of speakers as well as newly released films every Wednesday (at 3 and 7 pm) and Fridays and Saturdays (at 7 pm) throughout the semester. The showings are free to students and open to the public.
  • The Kimball Theater, located beneath the dining hall, shows “not quite second-run movies.” It shows two movies a week; the same movie is shown on Wednesday and Friday nights, and a different movie is shown on Saturday nights. These are films that are already out of theaters, but have not yet been released on DVD.
