Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

One student said it best, “It’s not exactly Animal House, but it’s a great time, and there’s a great sense of camaraderie.” Most parties at Holy Cross aren’t too wil—dthe combination of Residence Life and the Worcester Police Department tend to keep potential mayhem in check. Freshman parties tend to consist of five to 10 friends sitting in a room quietly drinking, hoping that they won’t be found out by the RA. Off-campus parties are a little larger and a little louder but also generally consist of a bunch of friends and friends-of-friends hanging out and drinking. There are only a few truly huge parties that attract half the campus every year, and these all take place on Spring Weekend, the weekend before classes end in May.

The bar scene occurs during the week. With the exception of the campus pub, there are no bars within walking distance of campus, so taking cabs is the preferred method of transport to and from watering holes. Irish Times downtown is particularly popular with seniors. Other than that, bars tend to go on a schedule. Tuesday is Pub Night, where upperclassmen begin drinking at the campus pub and then move to Mahoney’s on Park Avenue. Thursdays involve going either to Plantation—a dive bar with a DJ on the other side of Worcester—or going to Tammany Hall, a live-music pub downtown. Holy Cross students frequent bars that other Holy Cross students go to, and they don’t usually venture into establishments inhabited by Clark or WPI students.

Crazy

Holy Cross is truly a party school. Lots of drinking, and people are really close. The school is very tight-knit and on-campus is all you need. Bars are 18 plus some nights and are really fun.

Everyone Gets Drunk.

I'm not 21 yet and so I can't really go to bars. However, I was able to get into one once where they didn't card and that was a fun time. There seem to be a good number of clubs and bars in Worcester. There are clubs that are 18+. I've been clubbing in Worcester a few times and those experiences were pretty fun. Cabs are your best bet for transportation. They're not terribly cheap but if you split the cost with your friends, it's not too bad. Nearby Caro Street is the center of the off-campus party scene. The few times I went, I wasn't impressed. A lot of the time there are just groups of kids standing around outside in the street trying to find a house party to go to. Besides that, there are plenty of parties on campus and ways to have more convenient fun. Most people do drink on the weekends.

Off Campus Parties

There are always good parties off campus but the bars in Worcester leave something to be desired.

Facts

Club Crawler

There are no clubs in Worcester. Students occasionally make the trek to Boston for clubbing.

Bar Prowler

There isn’t much consistency between which bar is popular one year and which is the next. They tend to be ones where Holy Cross students bartend, whether you know them or not. The following are a few which have recently been popular.

Organization Parties

None serve alcohol. The cultural awareness parties—hosted by ASIA, INDIA, and BSU—always have great food. The Campus Activities Board (CAB) and other organizations usually host a few dances each semester.

Bar ListingsWhat's This?

Mahoney’s

This is a popular hangout with Clark University’s graduate students, though Holy Cross undergrads have been known to show up on occasion—generally when the line for Foo Bar is too long. This is a more mature drinking experience, where one doesn’t have to be worried about being drenched by a spilled beer.

The Pub Hogan Center

Interestingly, this isn’t the most popular hangout. Tuesday night (Pub Night) is the big night for going to the pub, but only until 11 p.m. or so, before students hit the town and head to other places. Drinks are cheap, and the pub is only open Tuesdays and Fridays.

On campus

(508) 793-3634

Tammany Hall

This is the other place on Thursday nights, for the crowd who prefers live music to DJs and a comfortable social atmosphere to one of groping and crowding. Tammany is actually one of the best bars in Worcester. It has darts, a pool table, and a friendly atmosphere.

208 Tavern

Worcester’s newest college bar!! Formerly Fester’s Dog House, the 208 Tavern is the spot to be. With two pool tables, Golden Tee, and a booming system, you are sure to have a good time here!

208 Millbury St.

Worcester,

(508) 799-4844

Dive Bar

Famous for its cheap drinks, big crowds, and late-night fights. Lots of people crawl into the Dive after midnight, which has a fitting mural of a shark on its outside wall.

34 Green St.

Worcester

(508) 752-5802

Irish Times

This is one of the few long-time hangouts and is especially popular with seniors. The bar is very strict with IDs and tends to be a little pricier than the others. With the exception of Holy Cross seniors, Irish Times generally attracts an older crowd of Worcesterites. It has a dance floor on the third floor, which is occasionally popular with Crusaders.

What to Do if You're Not 21What's This?

There are plenty of coffee bars in Worcester, but these are difficult to get to or find without a car. Jillian’s, on Grove Street, is an on-again/off-again hangout, which features billiard tables and arcade games. By and large, though, parties and on-campus activities dominate the under-21 social scene.
