Most students say that the William & Mary Campus Police are not out to punish students excessively but are only there to protect everyone. RAs can be stricter since they live right near students and are obligated to refer them to the administration if they are too rowdy or if they are drinking underage, but strictness varies from hall to hall. Students agree that W&M takes its Honor Code very seriously, which is considered a very good thing. Lying, cheating, and stealing are not tolerated, and students caught violating the Honor Code will have to go before the student-run Honor Council, which determines the punishments of violators on a case-by-case basis.

Overall, the police maintain a healthy balance between excessive punishment and protection. A new initiative called the Medical Amnesty Policy allows drunk students to seek medical assistance for a friend in alcohol-related incidents without fearing judicial repercussions for either of them. This policy has had a very positive impact on the relationship between the students and the administration and has been well-received by campus police, who are all more concerned about student safety than busting people. A lot of students form friendships with the officers and feel safer as a result. Students say the police usually won’t get you into trouble if you’re intoxicated unless you’re loud and obnoxious. So if you’re out getting hammered, be sure watch your stumbly step on the way home!

They stress telling the truth. If they ask you if you’ve been drinking and you have, you need to say yes. If you lie, (a) it pisses them off, and (b) you’re liable to be kicked out of school for violating the honor code. (

The school is pretty strict about rules. However, a lot of faculty and administrators turn a blind eye to drinking. The Student Conduct Council and Honor Council are student organizations that handle these issues. The school considers tradition to be important, so the Honor Code is very, very important. So whatever you do, never lie, cheat, or steal here.

Campus Police keep an eye on things to make sure nothing gets out of hand. Still, they certainly don’t look the other way if you’re flaunting it, but generally don’t give many people a hard time.

I had to do a ride-along with a cop once and asked him about their policy. As far as drinking goes, the police will usually only pick you up if you’re flamboyantly drunk or present a danger to yourself or others (this includes getting sick). If you get caught by a cop, the absolute best thing to do is to tell the truth. You’ll probably get a stern lecture. If you get caught lying or a cop suspects it, you’ve probably just gotten yourself a ticket or will be referred to the administration.

It’s never hard to drink on campus. I did know a few people that got caught, but they were all doing something stupid. If you play it safe and subtle, no one will be too strict with you. I didn’t have any experience with drugs on campus, but I don’t think Campus Police get involved in that much.
