Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Overall, students tend to agree that the school and the Williamsburg police are fairly intolerant toward underage drinking and indiscretions of that sort. In 2010, the school passed a rule banning any surfaces suitable for drinking games (that includes pretty much any semblance of a pong table in the fraternity units or on-campus housing). Such excessive action is to be expected, considering Williamsburg is a sleepy and somewhat conservative town. Along with the intolerance toward any sort of underage drinking is the strict and traditional adherence to the honor pledge that students are required to take during orientation at the historic Wren Building. The pledge stipulates that students not cheat, lie, or steal. Violations of the pledge are taken before the student-run honor council, and in the case of more serious offenses, taken before the Dean of Students, who is known for being a stickler.

It's best to take the honor pledge seriously, and to be responsible and appropriate regarding drinking. Police will stop students if they suspect any sort of intoxication, no matter how insignificant. Students at W&M are pegged with a citation and asked to appear before court in such cases of underage drinking, though they usually get off with community service hours. Still, it's best to be smart about alcohol consumption and to stay off the streets when intoxicated. RAs are now exempt from having to visit the sorority and fraternity units, so any underage activity is usually unreported there, but freshman dorms and other on-campus housing have RAs that tend to be on-the-ball about such violations.

Dont Be Dumb

If youre dumb, then youre going to probably get in trouble. If you dont do stupid things that probably would get you in trouble anywhere, then youll be fine.

Noise is somewhat strict though off campus.

Police

William and mary police are a joke, but Williamsburg police are nothing to mess around with. There is a medical amnesty program that can get you out of trouble with the school, but not the law if you are proactive.

Alcohol

The school hates parties. The college only likes acceptable small drinking in small gatherings. Other than that rules and regulations have been passed to try and prevent mass gatherings. The academic policies are actually fair and just.
