Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Though William & Mary has gotten a lot of bad press regarding the attractiveness of the men and women at the College, it's safe to say that most kids are actually cute and friendly. While they might not qualify as "sexy" by society's standards, there is a fair amount of awesome boys and girls that can inspire anything from a hookup to a full-fledged relationship. With this being said, there is also a fair amount of "nerds" at W&M, whose social awkwardness might overshadow the friendly, outgoing students due to the fact that this is such a small school. Almost everyone, regardless of attractiveness, has something unique or, in some cases, quirky about them, which can be refreshing if you are open-minded and seeking interesting friends and partners.

Greek parties and mixers are a great way of meeting the aforementioned sociable men and women, though academic groups and school-sponsored events and concerts are also a surefire way of getting to meet new people.

Interesting

If you're involved in Greek life or an athlete, the school population is probably standard as far as any top university goes. There are some really beautiful people, alot of genuinely attractive ones, and some duds. Although pretty much everyone is intelligent which is nice.

Outside of those athletes and greek life however, the talent is somewhat limited.

Nerdy

We're twamps. Even the cutest of us all are going to have an inner nerd. There are plenty of cute couples on campus, at the boy/girl ratio is about average for a liberal arts university. We're average looking for the most part, there are plenty of "cute" people, but genuinely "hot" people are few and far between. We're not a big "hook up" campus, there's a lot of "dating" but I don't usually see a parade of walk of shame like at some other schools. Those who go looking for parties can find them, especially if they're greek or in a social club.

People dress casually for the most part. There are the "lily and pearls" girls, but for the most part it's jeans, sundresses, shirts. Nobody gets a dirty look for rolling up to class in sweatpants, but at the same time it's not uncommon to see people dressed to the 9s at all times.

Student Body at W&M

At William and Mary, there are an obscene amount of weird, nerdy students who are overly invested in their studies and nothing else. As seen in a recent youtube sensation (also posted on Barstoolu), at least 100 students were outside of the campus library on Sunday simply waiting for it to open so that they could run inside and...study. Many students brought sleeping bags, coffee makers, and other items that would be necessary for living in a library. During exam weeks, many students even wash dishes and brush their teeth in the library bathrooms. Approximately 25% of the student body is involved in Greek Life, which is absolutely essential if one wants to have a semi-normal college experience while attending William and Mary. Unfortunately, even when in one of the "more popular" Greek organizations, there is very little going on during any given weekend. Aside from the varsity athletes--who, understandably, interact very little with others on campus--the Greeks are the closest you can get to "normal" here. However, many of the fraternities are creepy and/or weird. Even for members of the more normal ones, finding girls to have some sort of a relationship with is very difficult. Many girls quickly realize the lack of "options" at William and Mary and maintain relationships with guys from their hometowns. Likewise, since most normal girls are in sororities, if a guy happens to have a problem with one girl, other girls in that sorority hear her side of whatever may have happened, limiting the guy's options in the entire sorority. It is also interesting that, outside of girls in sororities, I could probably count the truly attractive girls--that are not athletes--one 1 or 2 hands. Even in sororities, girls are not very attractive, and 95% of girls think they are more attractive than they are. Most girls who come to W&M have never drank before college, but once they begin doing so while they are here, they become more and more cocky, thinking they are all of a sudden the hottest thing in the world. This school is small compared to many, but at the same time, we have one of the ugliest student bodies in the country. Additionally, as William and Mary is a highly ranked, difficult school, students are often very conceited and arrogant about their intelligence. Despite the fact that job placement and career salaries are not necessarily any higher when graduating from here, other students thumb their noses at very respectable institutions such as Virginia Tech and James Madison. While there are some normal students and many nice, friendly people, the combination of the student body and aspects of the university as a whole prohibit what would seemingly be a "normal" college experience.

Student Survey Poll ResultsWhat's This?

I would say guys on campus are

What kinds of relationships have you had since coming to school?

How would you rate the social scene on campus?

Facts

Social Scene

The most active social scene centers on Greek life at William & Mary, though there are a lot of clubs and groups (a cappella groups are huge) that have their own social circles, as well. Freshman halls are where students meet most of their friends, most of whom will end up in the same fraternities or sororities.

Hookups or Relationships?

Though monogamous dating is common, having a solid and reliable hookup buddy has become a popular choice regarding male and female relationships. A lot of people have opted to circumnavigate the drama surrounding relationships and instead have an exclusive hookup that may or may not lead to something more.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

Many students meet while participating in clubs and organizations, in the biology lab, or in their English class. It’s not to say that W&M students spend all their time doing work or being involved in organizations, but most of them are nerds at heart, and often find that special someone while in the midst of academic pursuit. On the other end of the spectrum are the frats and delis, where students go to party and often find people to hook up with.

Dress Code

The dress code is super laid-back, especially considering the fact that in an old, colonial town, there's not too many people to impress. Jeans, jeggings, leggings—all paired with a long, old T-shirt—are a very common yet unofficial uniform for girls. Boys match polo T-shirts with khakis or jeans. Outfits are generic and overall uninspired—though you do occasionally see someone rocking a punk hairdo or a nice Lilly Pulitzer dress.
