Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

William & Mary is extremely safe. Theft is virtually nonexistent, particularly among the student community, considering that every student is required to take an honor pledge asserting not to lie, cheat, or steal (a tradition instituted in Thomas Jefferson's time). Most students take this very seriously, and therefore, instances of theft in student centers (like the library, for instance) usually never occur. People are also keen on leaving their doors unlocked for this very reason, which, though it is not condoned, doesn't usually result in theft or assault of any kind. The community also has a very safe atmosphere, considering most of the people you'll encounter during the day include other students, elderly people, or families touring the colonial area. There have been instances wherein a suspicious individual is spotted lingering around residence areas at night, but all occurrences are promptly taken care of by the William & Mary or Williamsburg police departments, which are very quick to respond to any sort of criminal case (which in itself is extremely rare).

As far as violence or sexual assault goes, instances of such are reported as rarely as a few times a year. William & Mary staff and faculty are quick to send out a message reporting such incidents and any information about culprits in any case, and also to provide students with means of coping with or reporting such instances of assaults. There are various help hotlines for those who have experienced assault, as well, though the occurrence of assault on campus is very rare.

A Joke

There are virtually no threats to personal safety when on the campus. The one alleged rape this year was proven to be a complete falsification. Unless you're afraid of tripping on bricks, this is the kind of school where you can feel pretty much assured of your safety. The health center makes appointments easily and is extremely helpful. Campus police make student safety a priority over enforcing things like drinking policies (I've only ever heard of students being written up by RAs) but will write you up if you're being stupid. The only real crime on campus is theft of bikes late at night over the weekends. Otherwise, the honor code is taken very seriously and personal belongings can be left out in public areas without threat of theft. I personally never lock my door to my room; there's simply no inclination towards theft by the students.

Safe Haven

At all times I feel a sense of security on William and Mary's campus, as well as in the surrounding area. I have never had to lock my dorm room, and feel safe traveling at night. With the nation's oldest honor code, students respect each other's belongings and act appropriately.

Totally Safe

Students consider Williamsburg as a safe city and it is. But like any city, there are incidents of crime but if you stay alert you'll be fine. There are always people around, even late at night.
