Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Getting by without a car is fairly simple at William & Mary, considering the trolley system and buses are free with a W&M ID. Any necessity is within walking distance anyway, seeing as the main grocery store, pharmacy, and MedExpress are all located a short distance down Richmond Road.

The most frequently-complained-about aspect of transportation at this school is the lack of parking available to students on or off campus, and the stringent and always enforced parking laws and regulations. Most parking is only available for one hour at a time, and unless you pay an exorbitant fee for a parking pass (either student or residential), you'll be fined with an equally expensive ticket. The parking garages on campus are probably the safest bet for ticket-free parking, though it still requires a pass.

Buses, Trolley

The buses maybe a few minutes but are free as long you have student ID, also they make stops and trips everywhere you want to go. The trolley is the same deal.

Kind of Sucks

Only juniors and seniors can get passes so living off campus as a sophomore would be nightmarish. But honestly? When have you heard of a college having great parking? It's pretty decent compared to other colleges.

Most Things Within Walking Distance

There is never a need for a car if living on campus. A better option would probably be a bike. The furthest walking between classrooms is about twelve minutes and is far more direct than driving. The campus is made to be more pedestrian friendly than car friendly. Off campus, still, most things can either be reached by bike or by the free public bus system. While admittedly, doing errands at Newtown or Monticello marketplace isn't terribly convenient by bus, it is free and if you have enough to do it's not really a hassle. Colonial parkway is beautiful for nice bike rides.

Long distance transportation consists either of the zip cars, which are very convenient, or the AMTRAK which is within walking distance of most dorms. The downside to the AMTRAK is obviously that it only goes along a certain route, but most students either come from Nova or the Northeast if not in the rest of Virginia so it's actually pretty widely used.
