Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Wooster stands apart from the crowd when it comes to academics. At Wooster, classes are small, averaging 21 students and never topping 50. With a student-faculty ratio of 11 to 1, it is hard to ignore the individualized attention students receive from their professors. Professors, not graduate or teaching assistants, teach all of the courses. Teaching assistants, although rare, are instead used for some classes as extra resources for test or homework questions. Wooster focuses on building good relationships between students and professors, and the College encourages interaction through personal advising meetings and its small class sizes. All professors have office hours, and they are very willing to find time to meet with you after class or to respond to your emails. Some will even host special dinners at their houses or invite their classes out for coffee for a study session.

Wooster is true to its motto, "Independent Minds, Working Together." And the College is very proud of its most defining academic characteristic—its Independent Study (IS) program. As one of the best undergraduate thesis programs in the United States, IS is the pinnacle of a student’s career at Wooster. Students have the opportunity to work one-on-one with an adviser to create a final project in their specific area of interest. The possibilities are endless. Students can choose anything from writing a children’s book to creating and performing a musical in front of the campus community. IS takes the place of one of a senior’s classes each semester, allowing him or her to focus on this important project. No senior will deny that IS is a ton of work, but it is a proud moment when you can say that you have finished your Independent Study.

Great Professors

I love all of the professors I have, in departments ranging from art history to geology. They are at once interesting, helpful, and knowledgeable. It definitely provides intrinsic motivation to attend class.

Difficult

I find the work, as well as grading policies pretty hard, but professors are almost always willing to work with you during office hours. Faculty to student ratio is great.

Good Academics

The academics are great. You have a lot of student diversity in the background schools from which they came. Some students are from really good schools and others are from some more average high schools, but at Wooster, there is a way for everyone to succeed. There are a wide variety of classes ranging in different levels of difficulty.

The most distinctive academic attribute is the senior independent study program. Each student is given an advisor (a faculty member) who will assist them in a year-long project that is linked to their major.
