Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Students who participate in varsity athletics at Wooster usually don’t find themselves disappointed. Although not all programs are the same, most sports teams feel that because Wooster is a Division III college, they are able to enjoy playing their sport, while still keeping school their main priority. Workouts and training are rigorous, and Wooster athletics is well-respected by other colleges in the conference.

For those students who don’t want to put in the time commitment of a varsity sport, club teams and intramural teams are also a huge part of athletics at Wooster. Intramural sports range from bowling to volleyball, and they get a huge response from students every year. Team members' friends love to come watch the games and enjoy the friendly competition (although the teams take the games very seriously!).

We Have So Much Pride

While the school's athletics are not as competitive as they are at other schools, the student body has so much pride for the sport teams at games. We are a school of traditions and pride which is definitely evident at the games. The women's field hockey team and the men's basketball team are the best in our division. This school does not focus around athletics.

It's Like Your Family

I am on the swim team and they are defiantly the people I am closest to on campus. Although it is a huge time comittment involving practices, meets, team meetings, and team parties, it is totally worth it. It seems that those who play a varsity sport are really dedicated to it, even if we don't get a huge following. Basketball is followed by the whole school and games seriously show our school spirit.

Most Popular Sports

As far as varsity sports go, men's basketball is one of the most followed sports at the College of Wooster because it has a winning record and often makes it to the NCAA Division III Championship Finals. Football is also a favorite sport, and students enjoy going to the games and supporting the team. Many students get involved in IM sports such as soccer, basketball, softball, and bowling.

Most Overlooked Teams

Intramural teams and women's sports teams in general

School Spirit

Although students are proud of their peers and love the traditions at Wooster, the College is seriously lacking in school spirit. While students will go to the football games and wear black and gold, you don’t see many students supporting the other sports teams. And, if it’s raining or cold, they may even be skipping out on that football game, as well. The only time that there is a lot of school spirit is when the men’s basketball team plays its rival, Wittenberg.

Getting Tickets

All regular season varsity sports games, except basketball and football, are free to the public and do not require tickets. Students get free admission into all regular season sporting events with student IDs.

Best Place to Take a Walk

Friendship Park, Christmas Run Park, around the campus (it takes maybe 20 minutes to circle the grounds), or Downtown Wooster

Did You Know? Opening in January 2012, the Scot Center includes four intramural courts for basketball, tennis, and volleyball; an NCAA regulation 200-meter running track, indoor long jump, triple jump, and pole vault; a fitness center with a full array of circuit training stations; traditional as well as elliptical running machines, rowing machines, and free weights; batting cages and other equipment for indoor baseball practice; new locker rooms; and new athletic department offices and meeting rooms.
