Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Student housing is definitely not lacking in options at the College of Wooster. Students can live in residence halls, program houses, or college-owned apartments. Plus, you have a choice of singles, doubles, and triples in many of these settings.

Unfortunately, much of housing is a matter of luck. If you happen to get a low lottery number, then you get to choose your housing early and therefore are able to pick a newer dorm to live in, like Gault Manor. Or, you may get stuck with a high lottery number, and by the time it's your turn, the only rooms left are in the basement of Stevenson Hall. Wooster works to keep its facilities up-to-date, so no dorm is in terrible condition, but it is obvious that some people are forced to choose the short straw.

Good Dorms, Good Communities

The dormitories at The College of Wooster are sometimes old, sometimes new but always great. The room sizes are generally pretty good (exceptions: Bissman, Armington's suicide singles) and Residence Life is very accommodating to individual needs. The communities you form within your dormitories are just as great. They say that, for freshman, admissions pays attention to individual personalities and creates dorms based around these. You are therefore more likely to make great friends in the space around you freshmen year. I can certainly vouch for this.

Dorms Patrolled by Campus Security

Dorm rooms are small and bathrooms are communal. Sometimes campus security patrol the halls "just because." They go out of their way to harass students, including in your personal space. There is no quiet space other than libraries if you want to study. Theft occurs occassionally. The cost to repair damage to the dorms is divided up and billed to everyone in the dorm, even if you had nothing to do with the incident that caused the damage. This includes cleaning costs for the drunks who vomit all over the place. It still astonoshes me that some people don't know how to flush their own toilet by the time they get into college.

Luck of the Draw

The housing process is fairly simple. It would seem as if they attempt to not only match you with a roommate but with a floor that you would get along with as well. Renovating the dorms is on the list of things to do at the college, after finishing the new gymnasium this spring.
