Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

At Wooster, the atmosphere is generally not very strict. RAs, administration, and Security & Protective Services are usually pretty lenient as long as you aren’t a person who is constantly causing problems. If a student gets in trouble, it is usually for something alcohol related: underage drinking, walking outside with an open container, or playing drinking games. If you aren't obvious and try to stay out of trouble, you’ll be fine. Security doesn’t go around campus and search for students to give alcohol tickets to.

In 2011, Wooster hired a new director of Security & Protective Services. This director was formerly the Chief of Police for the Wooster Police Department and has served as a patrol officer, detective, and SWAT team member for more than 24 years. Because of this change, students anticipate that Security & Protective Services will change its easy-going ways and begin to crack down on students.

Campus Security; Safety = Priority

Security's priority is definitely student safety. Students do get in trouble for dangerous or reckless drinking, and dry residence halls (predominantly 1st year residence halls) are enforced if drinking is obvious. Drug use, including marijuana, will typically result in trouble within the school, however the police are rarely called.

WARNING INCOMING STUDENTS

They have moved the former chief of police to head of campus security, and every security guard on campus was/is a cop as well.

They send patrols up and down hallways constantly, you can't go up or down any street without a security car passing by, and you can't walk around at night without being approached, interrogated, harassed, and forced to present college identification. This includes being off campus.

If you get caught with weed or alcohol, expect to be hiring an attorney and going to court. Depending on how much you're willing to pay an attorney, you'll get anywhere from $500 in fines and drug classes to probation, drug classes, and around $1000 in fines.

If you're looking for a liberal campus like Oberlin or anything similar, this is not your place.

I know someone who was caught smoking out their windows by security guards in bushes with binoculars. Anyone who says that campus security is laid back is obviously not on the same campus. They actually fired two officers very recently for how bad they harass students.

If you want to have fun, get loose, and enjoy a typical college night-life after a long week of hard work, do not attend the College of Wooster.

I myself and transferring by next fall.

Not Too Bad

The college understands that we are just students, so you would get three warnings before being penalized. As long as its nothing serious such as damaging health or security, the college is very flexible.
