College Prowler Take
Personal computers are essential to surviving at Wooster. However, the existing computer faculties are not as good as they could be. Recently, IT made the decision to remove all computer labs from the dorms, because the labs were not being efficiently used, and they felt that they needed more room for students to live. While most students do have their own computers, some things, like printing online reading assignments, are done much more efficiently on the school’s computers. Printers also used to be located in each dorm. The absence of these printers means that students without printers now need to walk to one of three computer labs around campus to print their papers. Computer labs are situated in the libraries and the computer center, and are available for student’s use until one and 2 a.m. on the weeknights. The new cyber café is located in the basement of Lowry Student Center and is open 24 hours. However, it is set up as a place for students to check their e-mail and grab a cup of coffee, as well as print out their papers, not necessarily for late-night studying.

The computer network is simply an Ethernet connection available for PCs or Macs. The computer labs are not crowded often (except for IS time), but the idea of having your own computer is beneficial. Frankly, when it comes to walking in the snow to a computer, I would rather be in my room instead. |

Computer labs are not usually crowded at all because most students bring computers. I would suggest bringing one because it makes life easier, but you certainly don’t need to. |

Well, considering there are no more computer labs in the dorms anymore, it can be kind of a hassle. I think there are enough computers for people without one. I think you might as well save your money and not buy a computer if you have to walk all the way to the library to print a paper out, because you might as well just work on it there. |

Definitely bring your own computer. There will be computers to use, but it’s that much easier if you have your own. However, it doesn’t matter if you bring a Mac or PC, because the network supports both kinds. |

I strongly recommend that students have their own laptop and printer, preferably one with a built in scanner for photo-copying and scanning pictures. |

That four-digit extension will remain with the student no matter where he or she lives on the campus. The PPX may be dialed direct from one campus extension to another. Off-campus callers dial (330) 287-3000, and enter either the student’s PPX or follow instructions to dial by name. Every PPX includes voicemail at no charge.
