Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

If you look at diversity purely in terms of numbers at Wooster, you will see that the College hovers around 5 percent international students and 10 percent domestic multiethnic students. But at Wooster, students don’t look at diversity in terms of percentages because they realize that you can’t define it in this way. Wooster looks at diversity like it looks at everything else—in a personal way. You are not just part of a diversity statistic; instead, you are the president of the South Asia Committee and you came up with the idea for South Asia Week, which got the whole student body excited about the Friday night dinner or the movie you were going to show. Or, you helped to plan the forum about the Day of the Dead, which gave students a look at what life is like in Mexico, where your grandparents grew up.

Diversity stands out at Wooster because students make it a priority. The College emphasizes all different types of diversity—ethnic, racial, economic, sexual—as important components to student life. And, when you’re in Wooster, Ohio, it’s always fun to be able to escape to a different part of the world by experiencing a new cultural experience or to say that you made a difference through activism in the community.

Trying, but Awesome for Small School

Minority groups (international, african diaspora) seem to stick together, but that is expected at a small school. Everyone is very accepting and it is very easy to mingle. Choose a variety of activities and you'll not even notice. Babcock hall is the 'international something-or-other-housing" and has an awesome diverse community

It Appears to Be Very Diverse

There are many international students, different religions, and an active gay community. Many economic backgrounds are represented but most are very well off, at least upper-middle class. I am not sure about challenges to ethnic/racial diversity though as I am a WASP.

How accepting is the campus community as a whole toward someone who falls into the minority (ethnic, sexual, or religious)?

How would you best describe the political beliefs of campus as a whole?

Facts

Gay Pride

Allies & Queers (A&Q) is an active student organization that works to educate the campus on issues faced by members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community. Overall, the LGBT community is accepted on campus. However, the city of Wooster is a conservative area, so the struggle for acceptance is one that A&Q continues to fight for. They strive to reduce prejudice against the LGBT community, raise AIDS awareness, and “create a safe community where LGBT people and those questioning their sexuality can exist without any need to disguise their identity.”

Political Activity

The campus community is predominantly liberal—both politically and socially. This becomes obvious during election season and in class debates. There are student organizations that facilitate voter registration, educate the campus on candidates, and work for social activism: College Democrats, College Republicans, ACLU, and Wooster Progressive Students. Wooster isn’t an overwhelmingly politically-involved campus, but students do keep up with the news and usually have an opinion about what is happening.

Economic Status

The major economic group at the College seems to be middle class. Because Wooster gives financial aid to so many of its students, there is variation within this group. There is also a large gap between those with financial aid, scholarships, or student loans, and those paying full tuition. But because Wooster is a small town without a lot of reasons to spend large amounts of money, these economic differences don’t usually stand out unless they are talked about. When most students wear sweatpants to class, you can’t really tell how much money people have.

Most Common Religions

Although Wooster was originally a Presbyterian college, it is now nondenominational. There is an Interfaith Campus Ministries group on campus, which is open to any individual. They work with faith-based student organizations on campus such as: Hillel (Jewish student organization), Campus Impact (Fellowship of Christian Athletes), Newman Catholic Student Association (Catholic student organization), Noor (Muslim Student Association), Sisters in Spirit (feminist spirituality group), WCF (Wooster Christian Fellowship), and Word Up! (outreach program).

Minority Clubs on Campus

There are a growing number of minority and multiethnic groups on campus: Black Student Association (BSA), Brothers of Diversity, CaribConnect, DREAM, International Student Association, Men of Harambee, Open America, Proyecto Latino, Pueblo de Esperanza, South Asia Committee, Student Advocates for Diversity, Ubunto, UJAMAA, Women of Dene, and Women of Images.

Did You Know? There is a whole group on campus dedicated to focusing on diversity at Wooster! Student Advocates for Diversity (SAFD) is "a group of students that believes that diversity is crucial to one's liberal art's learning environment and that diversity is a way of life. Without understanding and celebrating one another's differences, we are unable to appreciate the richness that our community offers."
